I Would Like To Know If A Set Of 1988 Turbo Heat Exchangers Will Fit On A 1978 Turbo Engine. Thanks For Any Advice I Receive, Larry

Yes. 3.3 engine is virtually the same between 78' and 89'. Certain markets had O2 sensor, others didn't. But head spacing and port dimension is the same, thus it's a bolt-on.

I bought a set of the older SSI heat exchangers and had to hammer out (i.e. put a dent in it)a bit of space for the "C"spring on the clutch to clear the exchanger on the driver's side. As you know, that spring expands and contracts as you activate the clutch, and prior to modifying the exchanger, it would bind up against it. Is this something that perhaps the newer versions of the SSI took into consideration? If not, then you might run into the same issue...dunno. RarelyL8 is the guy who would know....

it also depends on if you have the short four speed or the long one.
the short trans requires some modification to the crossover tube. you will also need a system-specific oil drip tank and connecting plumbing, regardless of the trans involved. Bill K

The '88 930 heat exchangers are the typical "Euro" configuration with the J-pipe and O2 bung.
They will fit a USA '78 but require the ROW oil line that wraps around the flywheel area of the engine and the correct log shaped drip tank. I have pictures if you need to see something. My personal car is a '78 and has '86 heat exchangers which are the same as '88.

This is a dumb question and slightly off topic. What are heat exchangers. I know they act as headers by getting rid of exhaust gases from the block and funnels it through the exhaust. But is this the mechanism used to generate heating for the car? If so, how does it work exactly.
I don't own a 930 or early 911 and have just recently started coming to this forum, although I've always loved how the 930 looked and fell in love with them when I saw one at an auction. So please forgive my ignorance.

Heat Exchangers = sheet metal that is formed around the headpipes (with airspace in between and an "in" and "out" for air) - the air is warmed by the headpipes and pumped into the cabin (when the flappers are in the "open" position) . . .
