Rough idle after oil change, need help just took delivery of my 76 turbo
I just took delivery of a 76 turbo 47k miles, had a full top end rebuil in 2000 with 40K miles, car needed an oil change, so i read nearly half of the 40+ page thread and decided i didnt want a synthetic oil since it has only run conventional. Anyways, i found a border line oil at autozone with an sl rating that should have enough zn and phos. i put in a 20w50 weight with a new filter. Now the car runs extremely rough at idle until temp comes up and it smoothens up. I looked at the manual and it says that it takes 10.6 quarts and prefers to run sae 30. I am going to change it tomorrow again but need recs from what i can pick up locally or shoudl i just bite the bullet and wait for some swepco. thanks.

Congrats on the '76 - we want pics! Sounds great.
Sorry I'm of no help otherwise - I just bought 12q Shell Rotella 5w40 to do my first oil change yet on mine. Any suggestions where to get filters and which to get? I'll do a search I guess... Good luck - let's see it! |
Oil is oil (within reason). A different brand or weight shouldn't make your engine run rough when cold.
Something likely unrelated has changed during that time. There are a few things that will cause a rough cold idle, generally fuel related. How long have you had this car? What are the climatic conditions? |
You might have over filled it and gummed a plug. I over filled once and had oil dripping from every where. Maybe you sucked a lot down into the engine through the blow by and vent tubes. Pull a couple of the easier plugs and check them for fouling.
