Tire recommendations for 930?

Hello,

what tires You are running and would recommend for a 930? Mainly street driving and perhaps occasional DE stab? (I did try search but came up with nothing)

Sumitomos- cheap & great option for mostly street use although some have had good luck w/them on track. Search under that brand name for more info.

What wheel sizes do you have?

With standard 16" fuchs, you want to look at Hankook Venturas for street/autocross. They are sticky but a good road tire with good performance and decent street life.

This is not my battle but I will say that I do not recommend getting cheap and heavy sumis. They consistently don't perform quite as well as almost all other tires in the class according to reviews I have read. Being a cheapo myself, I surely would have bought Sumis if I could find a reason.

I've run the sumi's on my '85 911, on the 930 16in fuchs and on the 17in Lindsey's I have now. They have been great on the street and for my first DE. When these tires are worn out I WILL be getting another set. Needless to say I've been happy with them.

These were listed as available from Town Fair Tire... a major chain.

I have to replace my rear tires, again (third set), not complaining as I have been getting about 20k on the Bridgestone Potenza S-02... need 245-45-16.

Mine now are Z rated and the Hankook I looked at (R-S2 Z212) were W rated. Not really going to make a difference for my street only machine... correct?

I replaced bridgestones with sumi's (due to a blown rear tire). After leaving the shop that mounted/balanced them, I returned about 4 weeks later with 4 bent rims. No off-roading, just MD/DC driving - same as when I had the bridgestones.

Can't say what caused the bent rims, but they weren't bent when the Bridgestones were on, and they weren't bent when the Sumi's were put on.

I decided to move to 17" wheels for more tire selections. Went with michelin sport a/s plus. I pick up the car tomorrow and will post after I drive it.

Sumitomo's were great for me initially, but sadly turned to Suckitomos after many heat cycles...

Highly subjective thread! How hard do you drive? Where do you drive? Do you ever drive in the rain? What tread life can you deal with? Blah, blah, blah.

Mine is a daily driver in the Seattle area, my car is slammed, stiff & tight. I push the car HARD. I run 17" x 8.5" fronts / 18" x 11" rears. B.F. Goodrich's G-force T/A's 245 /295. I have about 3k miles & so far no real complaints.
The car was stock when I bought it with 17" turbo twists & sumi's on it. The Sumi's where well......questionable at best. After the suspension mod.'s, the Sumi's where 100% unacceptable. Hence the change to new rims & rubber.

According to the local cops however it appears I do not drive or behave in a proper fashion, so.....your results may vary.

I bought the R-S2 at Edge racing. Good all around tire.

Toyo makes a street tire which is not as sticky as the Hankook. It is extremely light weight however, which is good.

However, the Toyo competition/autocross tire is very long lasting for a comp tire, and happens to be the stickiest and best tire you can put on a 16" Fuch for street/autocross. It just needs to be replaced fairly often if you drive much.

Anyone who wants ultimate performance and doesn't drive more than a couple thousand miles a year should be very happy with Toyo comp tires.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this part reads as though Sumi's were the reason for the 4 bent rims? That's higly suspect. I would be more inclined as to the shop that did the work. I mean seriously what are the chances you get 4 bent rims in 4 weeks without running over a curb or something like that. I've driven my Sumi's all around Mi (Detroit) into other States etc and they have seen many, I mean MANY, potholes. Especially around Det. Yet I've NEVER bent a rim.

Ok, I'm not saying the Sumi's the best tire out there but for mainly street driving with occasional Auto X or DE they should be just fine. No affil, just been happy with them.

Unless you will be driving in snow and ice, why not step to a BFG TA KD or Toyo RA/1 or equivalent?
No compromises unless you drive the car over, say, 5k a year.

Is the Toyo RA/1 the competition/autocross model? That is probably the best tire in the class.

What are they like in the wet Craig compared to a street tyre? I see toyo do an r and an s street tyre. The s is for the wet.

RA1s are/were a favorite for a wet race tire - pretty darn good tire!

I would not use anything other than an RA/1 or the like - they are too much fun and a street tire is just horrid in comparison......once you've had it, you will never go back!
