replacement front rotors for 79 floating design
Looking to find replacement rotors for the 78-79 front floating rotors on my turbo.
It has OEM stock 917 style brakes and calipers. OEM rotors are about $450 per and I am looking for an alternative rotor assembly or other way of modifying later model rotors to fit the 79 hats so that I can save some money. Has anyone found a solution that works and is less costly than replacing with stock rotors at $400-$450 a pop? I know that upgrading to later 80-89 hubs would allow later non-floating rotors but I wanna keep the floaters for their better thermal design and they are better suited to track days and DE days. Plus avoid the cost of new hubs. Fred |
Not alot of guys with 78-79 model year turbos?
Anyone bothered by the pricing on replacement rotors? Was looking for some ideas..... |
Fred check out www.vehiclecraft.com I have 79 floaters on my 87 930
and was looking for a cheaper solutions last year. This place has them, though they are not the drilled vareity, but cheap non the less. I ended up going original though. |
thanks Rod, that looks like just the ticket.
Why did you go original, do you think they have some slight advantage over VCI slotted or just to remain the stock appearance? Fred |
I would check with Steve at Rennsport. I've been using the VCI Coleman rotors for years on our race car. I recently switched to a Brembo drilled rotor using Rennsports hats. I was told they would last at least twice as long and not wrap like the Coleman's. This do to the Brembo being made out of better material. This is a non-floating rotor.
I paid $900.00 for the hats & rotors. The rotors alone would be in the $500-600.00 range. With the longer life I figure I'm coming out ahead in the long run. Also do a search as the pros & cons of floating rotors has been discussed. |
Fred, I went with the drilled originals cause I just replaced my rears with drilled original and didn't
want the slotted front vs the drilled rear look :( Yea, that was a real hard pill to swallow to pony up $900 for front rotors! Never again! The guys name at VC is Doug, he does phenomenal work on brake systems, he rebuilt and powder coated all 4 calipers for me last year. Good Luck! |
