Great set-up sjf911, I was toying with the idea of either intercooling or using water/meth injection for my Supercharge application. It's funny this thread came along, since someone from the 930 cround suggested to me using this system a while back.

Since I have limited space under my hood, due to my Paxton taking almost half, putting an intercooler would be a hell of a job, it will probably be more costly as well,... intercooler ain't chaep.

Are these kits pretty easy to install, for a moderate DIY kind of person???

Obviously tuning would be a chalenge, but I could always swing by TPC and have them doing the final touch.

Anyone has done this on supercharge 3.2 before, from what I gather the 3.2 intake is a more direct flow path than the 930, so this should be a great application,.. right?

It was a relatively easy but tedious install for me. Installing the controller was the most time consuming process as I had to fabricate a sheet-metal insert in the center console to mount the controller to. If I had to do it over again, I would get the controller that looks and fits like a standard 52mm gauge. You do have to have to tap into a vacuum/boost source (brake booster before the check valve), switched and always hot 12v power and a relay, as well as assemble the pump/tank combo and mount it along with running the wires to and from the controller and the injector line to the engine compartment. I ran my plumbing zip tied to the AC lines but protected by plastic wiring sleeve. I chose to braze on a bung to mount my injector rather than simply drill and tap the pipe. All in all, I think it took the better part of a weekend to get it finished.

I have been on the coolingmist and the snow web site and review their info, I was just wondering if I would really benefit from the failsafe option ??? I am not running an intercooler anyway, so even if the methanol injection fails, wouldn't that be the same as blowing hot air as I am doing right now with my S/C ???

Just asking,...

Thanks

Stephan

yes, if you only want the meth for "added safety" and are not going to run more boost-timing. But usually thats not the case. A pound of boost here and degree of timing there (the slope is slipery my friend)

Here is a Snow system in a '73 without engine. Pump and tank on right rear, controller on top left rear.

With 73.5 CIS TURBO motor installed. No interference issues

In looking on the Megasquirt site, it looks like MSII supports alcohol and nitrous control. Did anyone consider using the MS brain to run their hardware? Seems to me that this would allow extra tuning flexibility in customizing boost, fuel, ignitiion curves, etc by tying them all together under one controller.

Great stuff guys,... really exited here, I may have found a solution to my power/torque addiction...

One more question,.. let's say I am setting up for the 50/50 windshield washer stuff (easy to supply as other stated) and then I want to go for 80/20 methanol to water or even 100% methanol for the occasional weekend autocross: would the variable / adjustable system work just as well or further tuning would be necessary each time the richer mixture of methanol is use?

Thanks

Stephan

Great question. Would a map change be needed or is an EMS flexible enough to compensate from the wideband O2 sensor inputs?

drmatera 10-16-2009 09:19 AM

If you just plan to "spike" the mixture for occasional events there is no need to adjust anything. But unless you are on the ragged edge of your mixture, or going to crank up the boost, I don't see why you would need to do anything.

Even with -20* washer fluid it was astounding how much more aggressive you could get vs pump gas.

I wanted to map for pure meth but be able to dial back to fluid if on a road trip. I will indeed be pretty close to the edge on boost since my turbo is most efficient at 1.3 BAR and prefer to keep the boost up for better transient response.

Megasquirt allows you to do this easily although you will need to carry your computer. You can develop (ie tune for each type of fuel or additive) and store as many VE maps as you would like. You merely have to load the appropriate one from your computer for the circumstances. I do this to pass emissions every year.

I feel confident the washer fluid will allow you to meet your 1.3bar goal with ease. I would tune for that, use that all the time and be done. Or figure out a mixture your comfortable with (say adding a bottle of yellow "Heat" to a gallon of washer fluid) and you know anywhere you go it's available.

Rain-X makes a -45C fluid that is 40-50% methanol. Not bad. Probably only available in Canada and Alaska..

For ease of access, Wal-mart washer fluid the supertech -20 is pretty much the best you can use. It's 40% methanol it has the highest percentage of methanol of -20 washer fluid that we have found per the MSDS sheet. The blue dye does nothing sure your engine will be a bit smurf on the inside but still completly free of any carbon.

Walmart also sells a windshield washer fluid concentrate that is 100% methanol and is apparently cheap, but don't know bottle size or cost yet to verify.

Devils Own and snow also provide a 49-51 methanol mixture, sold in case of (4) 1 gallon container @ a cost of $20 and $30 respectively. I think it is fairly inexpensive at $5 a gal, .. depending on how much boost and nozzle size you are running.

By the way kenikh, do you know what the other 10% is in the -45 fluid???

MSDS simply said 40-50% methanol and all other ingredients had no environmental implications, which means it is water. Surface tension modifiers, ethylene glycol and detergents have to be listed.

why buy boost juice for $20 when washer fluid is $.99 / gallon at the auto parts store

This is my take. While increasing the methanol content may give me marginally more octane effect, I don't think the performance increase is worth the added complexity/risk. Washer fluid is cheap, plentiful, and universally available. The next step in performance for me will be lowering compression and porting unless I decide to use the 3.2 crank and rods I have sitting on the shelf to go to 3.4L, but then I'm looking at new headers, turbo, IC, ........$$$$$$$

You guys are gonna LOVE this:

Methanol percentage for just about every readily available fluid and concentrate on the market.

drmatera 10-19-2009 09:33 AM

sweet,,, thats good info to have.

kenikh 10-19-2009 09:48 AM

The "**" notes are the most interesting. Avoiding brands with antifreeze (propylene glycol) is key.

drmatera 10-19-2009 10:17 AM

YES, that and detergents. I think the pink fluids have detergents.
