1st oil change (finally), to find my 3 fave letters:

So I FINALLY(!) managed to change my f'n oil Fri. night. Headed over to my GT3 bud's a coupla towns over, he's got a huge garage with a lift. Scenery there doesn't suck, GT3 w/ some Cup Car treatment (997GT3 due for July delivery heh heh), bone stock time capsule 964, built up 951, and f'n A *the* f'n cleanest '86 930 I've yet seen. Orig. owner, Blk / blk, H4's, Borla, nice steering wheel, and - coup de grace - OE silver / silver BBS basketweave's(!!!). While we're both @ 45k, his is just sooooo perfect (mine's nice buuut). I'll get pics of it next time I'm there and share, it looks teets w/ those wheels IMO.

ANYwho

So this is the 1st time I've had mine up in the air in the 1.5yrs I've had it. What do I learn???

_L_S_D_ BABY!!!!!

WHOO HOO!

I'm so frickin' jazzed! I kinda suspected I "may" have it (my option code sticker is missing) based upon the way the tail squats and wags as I hopelessly shred the poor defenseless 245s off when the boost hits. That, and, someone somewhere once "speculated" that cars mit Sport Seats likely also have LSD. Welp, in this case - yep.

Dropped the case and the reservoir, then the hose to the rear cooler and let it empty to a drip. Put 10qts Brad Penn in, warmed it, checked, added an 11th. This puts it JUST at the last marker on the stick. Should I add a 12th? Reading here has my gut thinking running it on the lighter side is prolly good. Bueller?

Sorry - I just had to share. SCHWING!

I only use about 10 qt to fill mine....checking the stick at normal operating temperature to make sure it is half way. Do you have a front mount oil cooler?

11 quarts is what I end up putting in mine during a change. That puts my oil level gauge around half when idling hot and my gauge is very close to what the dipstick in the tank reads.
You can bend or "recalibrate" the little float arm on the oil tank sending unit to make it accurate with the dipstick. Don't have to drain the oil to do it either, but get a new $4 cork gasket for it first.

If I was about to leave on a long trip I'd put in a 12th quart if there is room on the dipstick.

Mine usually takes 11 qts. as well and reads just about to the top of the dip stick mark. I don't drain out the oil cooler, though. Never occured to me to do that.

Thanks guys.

Yeah Mark I figured what they hey on the rear cooler (my '87 has all OE coolers, no front mount), seeing as it was right there staring me in the face and it was all of 2 hose clamps to empty it out.

With 11 in, my gauge reads just to the top of the red zone, which is what it read when I dropped it.

Kris - thanks for the kind words and for thinking of my 'spider'. Headers are a long way away for me unfort. so it'll stay on there for time being, but I appreciate your asking. Yeah, Bill's is sooooo fookin CLEAN I was astounded. I'll def. get pics next time I'm there. Those BBS's on the blk/blk just look so killer.

LSD FTMFW! 8-)

It sounds like you may be thinking that disconnecting the big "S" hose from oil tank to the the bottom of the engine mounted oil cooler drains that cooler.

The big S hose is the oil intake line for the main pressure side of the oil pump from the oil tank.
It looks like it might be plumbed into the engine oil cooler but it isn't, it's just attached to the bottom of it.

Disconnecting it and draining it during an oil change gets rid of around a half quart or more of dirty oil so it's worth doing that.
Some people also disconnect the threaded line from the external thermostat up by the spring plate to the oil tank because another half quart or so will drain out of that one.
