Question Rings?????

I pulled my 88-930 engine because of a bad valve guide on # 2 cylinder. while i am having the heads refinished at Ultimate Heads. would it make sense to hone the Cylinders and put new rings?? The car has 58k miles and the leak down was very good except # 2 that was leaking by the exhaust valve!! #4-5-6 were 4% and #1&3 were 6%

Any Input would be great! Thanks Clark

Hone the cylinders? You've opened Pandora's Box on that subject!

Personally, I would recommend taking the cylinders out and spec-ing them for taper and oval. If they spec out ok and you still see the cross-hatch, deglaze them with a Scotch-Brite pad and put new rings in.

You need to check the pistons as well. The piston top ring groove wears and if you install new rings in a worn piston they will break for sure. If the lands are within spec then I would say rering them. If not then it is better to get new pistons, which you could go JE pistons with the Mahle cylinders if they spec out like mentioned above.

I agree with the scotchbrit idea. The 930's have nikasil coating, not alusil, so there shouldn't be any issue with changing rings.

+1 on checking those ring lands. You'll be rebuilding that engine in no time flat if they are worn.
