Installed SSI System by RarlyL8 + K27S, impressions...

Regulars here on the forum may recall my thread about doing the install:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=457301

Well, I've buttoned it all up, done the prescribed break-in miles on the turbo and the results:

Throttle response is improved, and there is definitely a noticeable increase in off-boost performance. I stayed off boost for 100 miles, and was impressed with how she felt even without boost. After getting through the 100 no boost miles (this is very difficult), when I first nailed the gas in 2nd...wow! K27S hits pretty hard. I have read where some folks say they miss the hyperspace feeling of the stock turbo...not in my case. I haven't had much chance to drive twisties, but what little I have done, I noticed an increased tendency for the ass-end to get a bit loose.

I put up a few video/sound clips for those who might be interested. Sound quality isn't bad if you have decent speaker or use headphones.

I was about to e-mail you to see how the long spacer worked out. Guess it went OK!
My computer speakers aren't so good, sounds much better in person. Gotta love the pops and burbles on decel!

Sounded just fine on my speakers...
Sounds like Bryan’s (x86Boardwells) exhaust system!

It would be cool if you take some more videos out in the twisties, but yeah the car sounds great.

As an owner of a stock exhaust/turbo system I am very jealous.

Thanks for posting the video. The sequel should be some open road drive-bys, I want to hear the "spectator" sounds!

Thanks for the comments folks. I will try to do some "drive by" videos next time. It may be a while though as winter just came back in force here in the NYC metro area

Congrats Jacob - that rules, you're so beyond psyched.

Tx for the vid. Love the tunnel blasts, and esp. the boost guage shots - it's fun to correlate sound effects with motor behavior / boost profile.

The open WG dump rocks huh?

I've GOTTA get my highway WOT shots vid up!

Tell you what, regardless of ^that^, soon as spring sprungs I'll whip off a few roadside blast vids and put 'em up. Brian's exhaust is to be HEARD 8-).

Good stuff...

Nice thread... enjoyed the pics of your install and the feedback on your results. Great work.

How about data? Has anyone run a G-Tech or similar on such a setup to measure 0-60 or 1/4 mile or the like? I'm curious what the results look like.

Again, great work and thanks for your posts.

Dave

Congrats!

Your old exhaust was the early US system which was the absolute worst turbo exhaust put on a Porsche and possibly any car.

Other turbo choices do come in faster and harder but you now have a great set up.

Just a suggestion, watch your boost level in higher gears for over boost and if you do not have AFR monitoring, get it on a dyno to make sure you are not going lean. You are flowing a lot more air now.

Enjoy!

Dave,

I haven't run any scientific tests to measure improvement with this set up. I'm not going to tell you that the new turbo and exhaust has changed my life...it hasn't. I never felt like this car was a slouch, even with the stock junk exhaust system and turbo. The car is just noticeably better. Throttle response is improved. Boost response is improved. Same attitude, just more of it. Sound quality is light-years improved. If you look at my install thread you can see the massive cracking happening on my old thermal reactor replacements. The thing sounded kinda ugly. I didn't even realize it until the SSIs were on, and then it was an "aahhhhh" moment.

911st (Keith, is it?), I do have an AFR gauge and keep an eye on it. I see high 11's at full boost. I also run a manual boost control (in the engine compartment so I can't get greedy). I run conservative boost levels and only occasionally see .8 bar spikes. It normally peaks at .7bar according to my NHS mechanical gauge.

Now...once I get my upgraded charge air cooler fitted, I think I may turn up the boost just a smidgen.

There should be no overboost issues with this system. A close look at the Y-joint will show the engineering that went into that cast piece. The wastegate signal tube is angled up, not at the 90* seen in lesser systems. The ID is also sized for the application which is a street CIS boosting 1.0bar or less and using a medium flow K27. As with all properly designed turbo systems there is room to grow built in. The Y-joint can be swapped out for one having dual waste gates should a high flow turbo be used.
