What do you think of this? 930 with 911 VIN?
All,
Went and got a brief inspection on this today. The car seemed okay. Obviously had a repaint, and the flares seemed like steel. The VIN starts with a 911. Owner said he bought it that way. So is it safe to assume that it was a 911 chassis converted and had a 930 engine stuffed in? Nice upgrades, but what you would say something like this is worth? thanks, anthony |

If the VIN starts with 911 then it is a 911 with a turbo upgrade or a 930 engine installed.
Value is tough because of all the upgrades. It has many goodies on it and somebody spent a small fortune. In this economy I would guess that car is worth around $15-$20k. It is worth more in parts. If you want a factory 930 or 911 turbo I would wait for the right one. If you could get this one for a deal then go for it.

A 930 is totally different than a 911. Therefore Porsche gave it ,its own type number. There's many books on the 930, research them before you buy. Good luck.

I wouldn't have any problem buying that car if your intention is to go out and use it, as long as you get it at a good price. It's got some great parts fitted, engine looks great, it's got good brakes, 5 speed box, loads of other stuff too.The one thing that would have to go straight away would be the wheels, they look awful.
A lot of money has clearly gone into it, if it all checks out i would buy it without loosing a wink of sleep

My mech.N.Y. flew down to Texas & brought a 996tt-40,000 miles on ebay, ,. Went to some hangar,..Looked at it and purchased it...Drove it half back to N.Y...no problems..He has the car now for over 8 months.. All good..He did a EPL-HP upgrade..So far so good. Anything u purchase is a chance, u never know what can go wrong... |

Couple of other thoughts, does it have the proper 930 rear suspension arms or is it still running 911 stuff? Turbo tie rods or 911? How would the brake balance be with big reds up front & stock 930 on the rear?

Owner said the car has the proper 930 suspension pickup points...not sure what it meant. He also wants $30K+ for the car. Is this is too much given the serial number issue? I am looking for a car I can drive and sell in several years.

Axl- have you been surfing what 'real' 930s have been doing in the past year? That is entirely too much $ for a 'wrong' VIN'd car, a '79 ('older'), and with 70k to boot.
If it were pristine and no issues to be sorted, $25k maaaaaaaaax. Otherwise maybe $20k - it does certainly have all the right parts. But still, that only goes so far... |

30k for a not real 930 I think not! It's a 1979 911 SC, it's nice but not $30K nice. There are a lot of real 930's out there. What are carbon fiber leather wraped seat inserts?

Carfax won't work on that year 911 because of the short serial number.

You can find a decent real 930 in the $20k-$30k range with no questions.

Yeah, I would agree that $30K is way too high for this car. There are other 930s in great shape with refreshed/rebuilt engine for around $30K right now.

If it’s a original 1979 930, the VIN no. should be following:
EU Coupé 9309700001 - 9309700820 (300 BHP) US Coupé 9309800001 - 93098001200 (265 BHP) Best regards Jesper |

What do you actually want? A "real" 930 for between $20-30K? This car with the VIN issue clearly isn't it. Or a modified 911 that will kick a stock 930's up and down the block all day long - in just about every way - and cost probably at least twice as much to build as the asking price? This car might be that - it's got some nice mods that are $$$pendy to do - but you would want/need to check out the modifications and state of everything very carefully. If you wanted to end up with that highly-modified car, this could be a good way to get into one - much cheaper than starting with an SC, a 930 motor, a G50 box and a pile of go-faster parts. And there's a point - which I think this car has likely reached - where it only matters to the Q-tip crowd care that it came from the factory with a different VIN. When you've replaced or changed everything that made this car a 911 with either a 930 part or something better, is it still a 911? Reminds me of the "I have my grandfather's axe - my father replaced the head, and I replaced the shaft" saying? But bear in mind the caution and sentiments being exhibited here. Should you ever sell the car, the pool of potential buyers likely to be in the market is a fraction of the regular 930 folks (which is pretty small to start with). Of course, you only need one, but.... Another issue is insurance; and this relates to your intended usage for the car. Regular auto insurance only gives coverage for book value - based on the VIN; which is of course, an SC in this case. Collector insurance will permit an agreed value - but usually limits annual mileage and the type of usage. Which kind of bites if you intend to treat the car as a vehicle, rather than as a toy. If you decide the car is mind-blowing to drive (and I'm sure it is very exciting) and it saves you a small fortune to buy that work already done, then go for it - just be aware of the realities.
