normally aspirated vs turbo

I own a turbo and love the way it performs, I actually like the feeling of being a very responsible part of how the car performs. You really have to focus on what you are doing and what you are about to do. That being said the majority of people I talk to prefer the normally aspirated engine on the track. Most of the comments are that less can go wrong and problems with turbo lag in the corners. What are your thoughts? The reason it surprises me is Porsche did so well with the turbo on the track. It really catapulted them into another league, yet so many mechanics will tell you go NA. Is the turbo a good track car?

The 930 Rocks on the track! I think it takes more laps to to learn to drive one well on the track. I would guess a NA car would be better on a auto cross. The turbo cars are more expensive to maintain, harder to drive well, but worth it on the track. The car is the happiest on the track!

Yesterday I helped a friend fix a non-operative power window on his 1978 SC. I took it for a spin afterwards. Its been years since I've driven an NA 911. Its a nice, fun ,tight car but...

...I'm really glad I have a turbo. No comparison.

I've been thinking on and off recently about picking up an SC or 3.2 since they are some real good deals these days. After the drive yesterday, I no longer have that desire. I'm officially a turbo snob now.

The 911 is much less stressed than the turbo on the track because it does not make as much heat. The 930 on the other hand is built for this additional stress and handles it well. More moving parts, more complexity and more expensive parts mean more cost of ownership.

For the track, I would prefer a naturally aspirated car. In fact, there is a gentleman who frequents Road Atlanta DE's who owns a track car with a 3.6, ITB's and a Motec ECU who regularly spanks everyone. The car weigh only 2100 lbs and is set up extremely well with a 5 sp. Only the best cup cars and drivers hang with him. I've been driving mine on the track since 2001 and teach as well, but I would trade mine in a heart beat for that car. I've even toyed with the idea of selling my motor, build a hot 3.6 and pop it in there so I could have a turbo look NA car. For those of you who know Goeffrey Ring, I think he built nearly the perfect track car.

Now if I could only fit a 6sp in my car, I might change my mind.

Flame away....

No flames from me. I've only done one track event...I'm talking about stock-ish cars too.

Don, is your car a dedicated track machine?

At my first DE this summer, I did a few laps in my instructor's car:

Its streetable, but barely. Totally stripped and dialed in for the track. I was very impressed with this machine, but I would not have wanted to drive it home from NC to NJ.

No - it pulls double duty. Mostly street as a daily driver now, but this Sept it'll be at the RA DE.
