Parked my car 2 days ago after a run (always starts first time no issues) came back yesterday and it turned over but no start. Had an auto electrician look at it today and no power to the coil. any ideas what could cause this and where I should check? Car has never done this before. Thanks again and love reading the forum - Konrad.

Could be a number of things but mine is usually the shutoff delay relay. One way to check is to jumper the relay plug and you will find out if it is the relay or something else like the cdi unit, etc. etc......

You should check when power should actually be going to the coil.. I think the power is only to the coil with the car running or when the starter is cranking the motor over much like the WUR and AAR. I don't think there is power with just the ignition on.
Not sure if this is it but it could be fine. Best of luck, Bryan

Thanks for the response guys. I've had the meter on it while turning it over and still no power. I'll keep looking and posting. Thanks - Konrad

Just got in from checking all the electrical plugs I could find and found this. I'm guessing this is the voltage regulator from the alternator? (it's mounted next to the CDI unit at the left rear). The plug underneath it was covered in what looked like a sticky tar substance which on further inspection turned out to be the inside of this unit which seems to have melted an run out the bottom of it. Could this be a) the reason I have no power to the coil or b) a sign of another problem which would leave me with no power to the coil. Either way I'm sure it's going to need replacing. Any advice or knowledge on this would be great as I just hate it when my car's not going. Thanks - Konrad.

Yep, looks like an external voltage regulator. Look like it got very hot and time for a new one.
If you ever change the alternator, there is an update to install one with an internal regulator. Of course, I don't know if that's good or bad as it's easy to swap yours out now. |
