Wastegate Gasket

Looking for the round asbestos-looking gasket between the lower iron part of the wastegate and the upper aluminum can (or, reasonable alternative). I was originally thinking heat insulation was the primary purpose for the part, but then realized a boost/vacuum leak could also result from this gasket failing.

How hot do you think the top of the WG gets? I am looking at different materials, one being teflon, which is supposed to be good to 500°.

Thanks,

Rasta

There was a Pelicanite that was making those gaskets. He told me to use two of them and some copper gasket spray during reassembly. It worked great and I have never had a leak since then.

I think the pipe would go over 500 degrees when the waste gate valve lifts.

Pretty common failure part on stock WG's. Mine was leaking there as well, and I gooped (sandwiched) some sort of high-temp epoxie there as a short term fix. Pretty crude, yeah, so don't flame me. But it worked until I lost confidence in the WG due to valve guide excessive clearances and leakage there. The solution: Tial

Well, the Tial will have to wait until I win the lotto. I actually have a new valve guide, so the gasket is all I need to do a good refurb.
