930 gets $77K @ Scottsdale

Gooding & Company's Scottsdale auction that has a representation of quality cars other than just mostly US Muscle. A eight thousand mile 1987 Porsche 930 coupe gets $77K and a real 1988 930 cab gets $52K. Many other special Porsche also sold, like a 1964 904 Carrera GTS for $1,045,000 , a 2004 Carrera GT @ $352K and a 1968 911L for$159,500. Forget BJ and its fake 930 SN cab selling for $35K. Now this is where the real deal good stuff is offered and gets real market pricing established for exceptional cars. No affiliation.

I think those are going to be very realistic prices for older 930 in the future. In ten to twenty years, these cars will be worth much money imo.

I think that modded ones that are a tribute to the early 934 935 racing program cars will also have enthusiastic buyers, especially for those who like to go fast. I too am interested in well upgraded 930 cars along with the stock ones.

Tony,

How much impact do you believe the low mileage impacted the price?

I saw that car at Gooding; it was/is an "as-new" car, literally. Still, that's some serious coin it brought...and in my opinion money that it 100% attributable to the mileage (or lack thereof).

Other than the Gooding 930 and a '94 Speedster that I watched go through at RM, the impact-bumpered cars that sold at the auctions this past weekend were junk...and they all brought stupid money! As was the case after attending these auctions last year, I'm very inclined to bring a semi full of 911's, but I'm seriously concerned that other than the educated/intelligent buyers at Gooding and RM, the buyers at B-J and Russo don't seem to know or care enough to put a premium on good cars versus the $hit they're all paying up for (ie; an extremely poorly re-sprayed '87 cab w/ 120k miles that went for nearly $30k at B-J, or the absolute P.O.S. '76 930 that sold at Russo-Steele).

At least the prices are out there. Some will think the fake 930 SN cab @ BJ is representative of what a real nice cars price should be. The other 930 cars that sold at the other auctions, the same week, that received much higher prices were for better examples. That will give the price analysts pause for thought that 930 turbos are only worth mid thirty's. Lets face it, a nice and real 930 SN cab with 31k miles is worth much more than that.

Mr Sloan, myself and others have sold special 930 cars at comperable prices in the recent past. The days of buying or selling perfectly preserved low miles 930 cars of any year for much less ( unless you are really lucky ) are long gone. I personally know of more than one that it would take offers near the 6 figures range to even start the conversation.

As have I, and knowing your cars and Sloan's, I think we can all agree not just on the fact that the prices are finally getting up there for the "perfectly preserved low miles 930 cars" but that the low mileage component of this is mission-critical for the kind of money that the Gooding 930 brought.

Also Tony, unrelated to this conversation, I just bought a '79 930 that will be out at CS in the next couple of weeks...I'd love to set up a time for you to meet me out there and/or at my shop; it's a pretty interesting car, and I've got a few questions that I suspect you'll immediately be able to answer.

Let me know, I'd like to see it, if possible, before CS as you are closer.

stock price vs modified price

Great to hear the prices are holding with the possibility of going up in the future. Question... if a rebuild is needed on a 930, do you stay strictly stock to preserve the value for a future resale? Or, do you do whatever upgrades to the engine to get more horses, with the downside of selling a "modified' 930 in the future and suffer a lower price than if the car had been kept stock?

Honestly, I kind of hope the prices stay low. I have 4 930's and not into them for the money. I just love the car.

When the 69 Camaro's were at the top of the market about 3 years ago my nice original SS-396 was stolen and never found. If it wasn't worth so much it probably would have still been in my garage.

Slant I have a pristine turbo but I am modifying it with an exhaust, new turbo plus intercooler. The existing parts I will box and put back on the car if I ever sell it. I can not see how doing these bolt on mods will decrease the value of my car in the future.

I've done the same... everything in a box that can be put back on. I'm curious about potential engine mods that will make the car non stock and may possibly devalue it when I sell. Mine is and 88 sant nose.

I've done several 375HP bolt-on packages where the stock parts are put in storage. Damned smart way to preserve value and enjoy the car.
Only the "bubble cars" that have the original air in the tires command any kind of money today. I have looked at several immaculate examples in the past couple years that had <50K on the clock. The moment the engine was cracked open the price fell to "driver" level, which is $25K-$30K right now. Even the bone stock garage queens went for <$35K.

I sold my 1979 930 9500 mile "original air in the tires" car years ago, for not much more than that. It was not as much fun to keep it as is driving and enjoying the ones I 've kept.

My friend was offered 84k for his 1989 930 with 2 thousand miles. I drove the car last fall and it runs very nice and is Brand New looking. He is contemplating accepting the money.
