Rebuilding my K27 turbo but then...
My 85 930 was smoking a bit on startup and had a lot of oil coming up the pipe after the turbo. After removing the intercooler and laying it on its side, oil puddled beside it.
I decided that it was time for a rebuild of the turbo. I talked to many people and most of them were saying not to touch it and leave it to the professionals. One guy working in a reputable turbo shop dealing with kkk product said that if it all seemed ok but only leaked oil, that I could most likely be able to do it myself if I marked all the parts and ensured that I put them back in the same orientation. The only critical part is the compressor position relative to the turbine and shaft. To balance them you can put the compressor on the shaft with the turbine, tighten the new nut to spec (105 in*pounds) and balance it. They then mark the position and take apart, install in the turbo and put it all back the exact same way as when it was assembled on the balancing machine. I decided to do it myself and to trust this professional of turbo rebuilding's advise who said to go ahead. The turbo seemed right, it build up the pressure ok and turned ok once taken out, there was a bit of axial play (back and forth in and out) but no radial play. I removed the turbine housing and compressor housing to find this: ![]() ![]() ![]() I guess that now, I have to send it in for a proper rebuild... I know that you can buy new compressor wheels and the profile matching part that is bolted to the housing (that rubbed) but I am not sure if it will be worth it... This turbo is a K27-13 7006 which is supposed to give a lot of boost at higher RPM but not be best for street use as it kicks a lot and comes on boost a bit later I was told. I plan on tracking the car but most of it is street driving... Not too sure what to do. Thanks David
