oil spraying help!
Since putting my engine back in I've been chasing a oil spray problem.. Here's a pic where it' spraying. You can see it's even hitting the noise dampning material in back. It seems to be limited to the back quadrant of the engine bay. I've eliminated the hoses going to the oil tank. I don't think it could be them anyway as they are low pressure. Same with the valve covers.. Oil cap is on tight as well.
Any ideas??

Maybe coming from the oil pressure idiot switch ect??? I would think you could see that pretty easily if the car was running, however . . .

LOl i know this one one of your rocker arm shafts came loose and slid off to one side. The oil was probably spraying up out of the spark plug hole. When i rebuilt my engine the last time i bought new aftermarket rocker shafts turned out they were undersized and several of them did this. This will also happen if sometime in the past one was overtightened and now the rocker shaft bore is oversized. I must have had a little of both, I replaced all of them with genuine porsche rocker shafts and one of them still shifted about a month back. turbo craft makes some ends made to prevent this but they are pretty pricey.

spray
Be sure to check the breather hoses for splits, holes etc.. ,There is more activity in those hoses than you think, at speed and boost that vent hose removed would cover your engine bay with oil mist, over filling the tank will also make a mess when it backs up in the filter box

Maybe you could wrap everything with something white [towels] and take a quick spin and check where the oil is coming from... ??

EXCELLENT IDEA on the towels, I've got a whole pack of new towels I will pack everything tight and take it for a spin.. Also Cole - the old one.. suggested it might be the metal hose that goes to the middle of the case..
Ken, I did adjust them but hopefully that's not it.. I really don't want to drop the engine again..

you only need to drop it about 5 or 6 inches to change them in the car. I always do that any way when i adjust the valves. just disconnect the oil ines on the top of the motor, pull the ac compressor off the bracket then remove the rear motor mount bolts and lower it down until you can reach the top and bottom valve covers from the fender well. it goes pretty quick.

As for the towel be very careful there are several theads in here about the damage caused by shop rags getting sucked into the fan and belts. If it has been spraying that can only come from a pressurised source. Not likely coming from a dripping breather hose etc. A quick way to check if its that back intake rocker shaft is to pull the spark plug wire and look at it if it's soaked in oil then most likely it's a shifted over rocker shaft.

Update it's looking like you may begrudge ken I wont have time to fix it for a couple weeks but I've isolated it to near the valve cover and before adjusted them they were really tight
