76 930 smooth at idle. hesitation when accelerating
 

Hello everyone this looks like a great forum and I am hoping someone here can help me with my issue.

I have a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo, 65K miles. The car is generally kept in storage and started and driven once every month or so. We recently had to get it out for smog check here in CA (which luckily it did pass today) and before hand we changed the oil and fuel filter and ran a few tanks of gas through it.

The issue is severe hesitation upon initial acceleration. At idle the car runs great and once it gets past the stumbling the car runs smooth. It is most noticeable in the lower gears. At some point years ago something may have been adjusted to help pass smog but we are not sure what that was. Car does not have a catalytic converter.

First do a good inspection of the motor compartment and see that everything is inplace including the vaccunm lines to the WUR and distribuitor.

Put a timming light on it and see if your timing is advancing when you blip the throttle.

If that is not it then check the CO level which should tell you if your Air Fuel Ratio's are ok.

A wideband air fuel meter would help to see if it runs lean which it sounds like.

You can always try to turn the idle CO adjustment a bit CW to see if that helps. If not set it back to where it was.

Does anyone know where the CO mixture adjustment screw is specifically on a 1976 Turbo? I remember hearing about an adjustment screw that can be adjusted to help pass smog on this car and I think it was sometime back but never readjusted so the car can run smooth again.

911st: Everything in the motor compartment seems to be in place and I checked all the vacuum lines etc.. I still need to check the timing like you mention but I have not had enough time recently and i need to borrow a timing light from a friend.

smurfbus: I am having difficulty locating that screw! Can you give me a detailed description for a 1976?

I finally located the adjustment screw and it only took about 1/8 of a turn of the tiny screw to correct the running lean issue I was having. You can see the T shape wrench at the top of the photo which is where the adjustment screw is hidden.

+1. We need to get back in the habit of requiring a pic of the car before any questions are answered. There seems to be a lot of new blood around, would be nice to see their cars... :D
