headers complete - took the 930 to Climb to the Clouds
Well, it 'only' took 5wks but I finally finished up Projekt 930 Header Install from Hell. I literally finished it up about 5min prior to departing on a 600mi round trip excursion to cover Climb to the Clouds | The 2011 Climb To the Clouds Hillclimb for Tuner Cars, European Import, & Sports Cars - European Car Magazine (btw my most recent bit is that red Audi Cq on the middle / left of the homepage).
Pretty nutty shaking a car down on a roadtrip like this, esp after all the work I did to it (valve adj, motor mounts, accumulator, control pressure tinkering, adj WUR, etc. - more on that in other threads) but I really wanted to take it, and I'm not that smart. Bombed up 91N with my neighbor in his 40th anniv 'Vette and a bud in his Audi V8q (yes that's the model), 4.2 5spd. Nothing like shredding mile upon mile of fighterpattern WOT @ completely Just Not Right speeds - fun times. Headers sure do make the car a ton more driveable - hey... throttle response! The car ran the 4.5hr trip really well, and managed to only get 'a talking to' 1x (and 3x too close for comfort / 'won't shart for a week' other instances) there / back! We shot Sat practice from just before the finish line (they ran 1/2 course to let the upper gravel sections recover from the torrents of rain the days prior): https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-N...6/IMG_9370.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...6/IMG_9369.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-D...6/IMG_9436.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1...6/IMG_9742.JPG When the course went cold @ noon they opened up the road for us to rip up / down as much as we wanted (muwhahahaa). Took some time to shoot my POS just above the 1/2 course finish line: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d...6/IMG_9661.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C...6/IMG_9654.JPG Also grabbed a few shots @ the summit - crazy visibility, and maybe 45*: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-e...6/IMG_9604.JPG Later we futzed around the paddock all day / night with the band playing and the bierz flowin, a bunch of my Audiot friends invaded the place (like a dozen urQ's!) so we had some really great times hanging together. Sun we shot the race (full course) from Cragway which afforded some amazing action. Only Porsche content here is a 944S driven by the guy who maintains the Auto Road in a Snow Cat in the winter 8-). Regardless, the entries were incredulous - Peter Sachs' 8C2300, one of 200 and w/ full provinenance... mind bending (Nuvolari ran it in the '33 LeMans, and it won CTTC in '37) watching it rip up the course. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M...6/IMG_9532.JPG Higgins from Isle of Man decimated the record by a near eternal 10sec: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Q...6/IMG_9832.JPG A highlight for me was getting a run up the course Sat in this '34 special - flathead Ford V8, Bugatti tail, Model A front suspension... this car has huge history, winning CTTC, and being campaigned all over. It was an honor and a privelage! Sadly, he put a wheel off just up the road from our vantage point Sunday and stuffed it up pretty good. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v...6/IMG_9728.JPG Interestingly, CTTC was run the same day as Pike's Peak. While 'only' 6,288' high, it lacks the guard rails, street lines, and width. It sure ain't yer grandma's backyard! If you haven't been, it's highly recommended! |
Beautiful pics Paul. Your car looks great although I was hoping for some pics of you hanging the ass out like that Subaru...
|
I'm jealous!
Good work Paul! |
thanks JP / Emanuel! (I'd not be there w/ it without you E-Man!!!!!!!!!!)
LOLz... well... I will have some pro pics my shooter took as I scratched my way up one run with him deftly hanging out the passenger window of the S60R lead car - alas - none opposite lock 8-). I did get it pretty sideways in the paddock tho heh heh heh... all the rain the night before made for some precarious mudbog forgings. Keep moving! Love the filth!!!: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z...2/IMG_9591.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-H...6/IMG_9720.JPG more mid / summit shots: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s...6/IMG_9667.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n...6/IMG_9594.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D...6/IMG_9593.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O...2/IMG_9610.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...6/IMG_9609.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-e...2/IMG_9611.JPG And who doesn't like roosters? We had some fantastic access, and shot from a killer location just behind the rock wall on the apex of Cragway. This compound turbo i6 Freightliner was freakin *INSANE*... 1,950hp / 3,400tq / 10k lbs / 0-60 4.8s / qtr mi in low 13's... I got utterly *annhiliated* with fookin gravel as he blasted past!!! Surprisingly fast for a big rig! Ever see a tractor trailer 4wheel drift past your toes??? NUTTY!: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...6/IMG_9797.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...2/IMG_9798.JPG What a weekend! Once my bud shares his shots of me blasting up the course I'll post 'em up... |
That looks like a lotta fun!
Wish there was some landscape, beautiful scenery, and curvy roads like that in south florida. ..there are some nice curves on the beaches here. |
Mmmmmmmmm, boobies.
Er, uh, oh yeah - curves... forgot about this neat matte 928 that ran: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_...6/IMG_9402.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...6/IMG_9440.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...6/IMG_9443.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...6/IMG_9559.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q...6/IMG_9790.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-i...6/IMG_9791.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n.../IMG_9792b.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Z...6/IMG_9891.JPG victory donuts - filled my fekkin shoes w/ dirt!: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...6/IMG_9910.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-c...2/IMG_9906.JPG Glad you enjoy! |
Quite a road.
Was tempted to go but the weather wasn't looking to good here. Picture taken last year in (i think) the same place you parked http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309462675.jpg |
Nice pictures. Wish we had roads lijke yours in our country. If we have one Ive never seen it yet! BTW what fuel accumulator did you end up using the big or the small one ?

Great pics Paul.
Surroundings like that makes job easier, right ? Glad we chat. wish we've had more time. |
Pete-
Ayup - same spot! Great shot! Yeah, the forecast was rather foreboding. Rained like hell getting there Fri night - suuuuuuuuuuuuuuukked. Worked out OK for Sat / Sun tho - phew. TDH- What country do you hail from? I ended up using the small accumulator - time will tell, but the $ in my pocket feels pretty good until then 8-). KJ- ***DAMMIT*** I totally meant to include the fact that you popped up out of nowhere there Sat night!!! That was too funny - totally astounded me, I was floored running into you. Plus I was suffering from the Mexican Blur @ that point (damn Coronas!). Too cool you made it. Jah, the surroundings there simply must be experienced. And, jah... bummer we didn't have time to do 'it' right (more time!). Next time! |
Cool event and pictures, thanks for posting
|
Beautiful scenery and thanks for sharing Paul! That must be nuts to see the big truck blasting its way up roosting you in the process! Too bad there's no GT3's competing like one did at Pikes Peak last year (and this year, too?). What a way to shake down your 930 on this trip!

TDH-
What country do you hail from? I ended up using the small accumulator - time will tell, but the $ in my pocket feels pretty good until then 8-). Im from South East Asia the Philippines. Its good the small accumulator works out for you. Mine has been working since Nov 2009 and its still going strong. |
