FYI: Shimmy in front end

Im posting this to help anyone chasing a shimmy in steering wheel at various speeds. I roadforced all tires 3 times , new wheel bearings (pitted races) and new tie rod assemblys . Still had shimmy, no play in front end whatsever (just backlash in rack) Took dive and did ball joints , Car is night and day , total pleasure to drive! dont cheap out like I did and try to avoid getting castle nuts that goes on bottom of balljoint( one side was welded on had to cut out. I found a air hammer with a pin bit pushes out the wedge bolts nice( mine were in there pretty good, just back off on the 13mm bolt a little and leave on wedge bolt or the bolt will fold right over. Get special tool for the castle nut for reinstall, if you do have it the castle nut will laugh at you as it resists. I just wanted to share info so you will not have to waste time !

Good info here as I do have a variable shimmy at higher speeds, with no play in steering @65k miles on car...were you able to wiggle the wheels when car was jacked up? Maybe some day I'll get to this...thanks, cliff

Had on a lift , no play. all my play was bearing play. Even when I had ball joints off car they still were pretty tight. Tight enough that I started to doubt that the ball joints were not going to fix.

man, thats hard to believe there was zero play....If the sprung weight is supported by a jack or what ever with wheel on car a bad ball joint should show some play by wiggling tire top to bottom...sure something else did'nt change during operation?...cliff

Car handles laser like too! Im a Volkswagen Tech and I can shake down a front end! I take out a lot of worn front end parts and the joints are wiped, no friction at all. But the joints out of the Porsche felt tight still! Front end is tighter over small bumps that I would get feedback and it wasnt bump steer. I will realign the car and let you know how it turns out.
