Turbo ducktail with 993 top grille project
well here we go,...
i have done alot of fiberglass work in the past, but never anything this big and complicated,...i probably could have sit down and put a better plan together, but i decided to dive right in and go for it.... i had a gt2 wing, but i live three blocks from high school and two blocks from police station, i didnt like the added attention, so went for this 993 top grill taped up (brand new 117$) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778522.jpg taking outer mold of grille to set into ducktail http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778586.jpg paper template of grille, to mark where to cut ducktail http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778620.jpg ducktail cut http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778712.jpg |
rough trim of mold to fit ducktail
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778804.jpg let the glassing begin (god i hate fiberglass) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778847.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778871.jpg at this point it looked like i had a HUGE mess on my hands, but my buddy keep telling me "better to load it up now, sand it all away later http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315778928.jpg |
first sanding with DA, i sanded right through some spots, so had to go back and reglass from the back side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779087.jpg final sanding and fit check one more time http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779141.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779181.jpg |
thank god my buddy was here for this one, cause i was lost as to how and where to start spreading filler...his idea was to lay the grille in place, and spread around it, then use a razor blade to go along outer edge before bondo sets
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779308.jpg first sanding and fitment is about 85%, i have a couple small areas that need to be filled, but here is http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779354.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779372.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315779388.jpg |

i should be in primer by wednesday, that is what im shooting for... i had a couple small areas to touch up with some putty |
Wow, very nice work
|
That looks freaking awesome!!! Will an intercooler fit under it? I would love to go stealth like that for my project car. You do nice work!
|
Intercooler will fit no problem, that is my stock intertcooler under the tan towel you see in the last couple pics
|
When are you making serial number 2? Can I be first in line :)
|
That is going to look great on your car. Very nice work.
|
Looks nice, but why? Is it to get better fitment with an intercooler?

the stock grille for the ducktail is small and does not provide enough air flow in my opinion the stock grille is not located over the intercooler, but rather higher up towards rear window and no one else has one of theseSmileWavy |
Awesome project! I love the subtle difference vs the standard duck! can't wait to see the final result!

im sure the second one would be much easier one of the vendors should take a mold of this and start producing them... and in return should wrap mine in carbon fiber! thats all i ask! |
Nice idea
Nice job Jim, please when you have it completed (or if it is) shoot a photo with it painted on your car. Great job and idea, but your correct you must have a ton of hours in it; it's a big job to get it to fit correctly and look original as can be. Check out the carbon rear reflector tread>really look nice on a dark car.
Thx for sharing! art |
