930 4-spd shifter????
 

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought a 87 930, 67K miles, all original with the exception of a Fabspeed exhaust.

My question: other than the WEVO, does anyone have any experience with aftermarket shifters? I've had a WEVO on a G-50 gearbox and it was pretty good. Just wondering what the consensus is on using it with the 4-spd box and if there is anything else I should consider?

Love the Turbo all stock with the exception of this school-bus like shifter!

Makes a big impact on shifting. I have Wevo's in our race car and vw bus. That was the first thing I replaced in the turbo, also installed the Wevo shift coupler.

Our cleaning service cleaned out our fireplace the morning following a normal winter evening fire. They put the ashes in a plastic garbage bag(with trash) and put the plastic bag in a plastic garbage container in the garage. Ashes caught garbage on fire, caught plastic container on fire, spread to stuff in garage, spread to porsches, porsches exploded, and took our house down with them. Lost everything we owned and two family dogs. Really Sucked!

Try just replacing just the shift coupler with the WEVO model first. That tightened mine up a good bit. I've heard the WEVO shifters are great but I've never used one.

Hargett also makes an aftermarket one but it looks nothing like stock and I've heard of people have to mod them right out of the box to get them working well.

John, I installed the WEVO shifter on my '81 Turbo. Wevo sells them in two models, one looks like the stock shifter and the other not so stock. Both have the first /second plane spring loaded and centered. You have to pull the shifter against a sping to place into reverse and the same for third/fourth plane.

While it did clean up the shifting, it did not decrease the amount of movement or distance you have to move between shifts...that part I did not like...

I agree with first replacing the shift coupler with a Wevo model and also replacing the shifter bushings (2) beneath the stock shifter. You may find with these two changes, you may not have to the $600.00 Wevo shifter...

It deceases the gear throw by 35%. The side to side travel would be the same.

thanks, that's about what I'm looking for. Not like I'm going to race this car, I just want to take some of the slop and distance out of it.

The directions seem pretty straight-forward. Any tips for installing?

Keep in mind that the factory shift coupler has slop built into it to reduce vibration at the shifter. I believe Pelican makes an updated bushing kit that eliminates it.

Also, remember the shifter mounts to the tub and the transmission is on the engine, so any movement between the two effects the shifting. You still need some isolation between the two, but a set of Wevo engine/trans mounts takes out the slop and makes a difference in the shifting, especially under power.

I have one from these guys. It is absolutely precise!

I made bushings out of AC barrier hose and presed them in around 5 years ago. They fit snug and work great combined with new busings in front and a short shifter.

I used the updated bushing kit from our host vs. the stock rubber units. No, doesn't do anything for shortening the throw, of course. I've become accustomed to the school-bus shifting I suppose, but I do wish that the shift lever isn't so damn far forward sometimes because of the reach...and I'm long-armed.

3rd was a little farther away than I like too.. so I took an acetylene and oxygen torch and got the shift lever red hot where it makes the bend back and bent it back a little farther and a hair to the left. I had wet towels to protect things from the torch.
Sat in the driver seat and got where I like it. There is a weltmiester short shift kit in it too.

Someday if I have it out I'll sand and repaint it black but with the leather boot over it you can't see it anyway.

More than once I've thought about doing just that. It seems quite a reach sometimes. I may eventually talk myself into what you've described.

Wouldn't extending the shift coupler out of its clamp a few mm's accomplish the same thing, moving the shift lever to the rear?
