930 VIN mystery

Hi all, new to the forum but I've browsed here for years. I recently purchased a 1986 930 in Connecticut. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the VIN on the title...it's a NY salvage VIN. I live in Maryland and the local MVA would not acknowledge the number.
Extremely long story short (6 months) the seller and his lawyer have been in contact with the CT MVA to have the salvage VIN converted back to the original VIN.
Every ID number that my local Porsche dealer showed me has been ground out and replaced including the engine, transmission and body number in the trunk. According the CT MVA there is another identifier VIN on the "Cowl under a plastic piece". Can anyone give me info on this? I'm hesitant to start taking the car apart without further info.
Thanks in advance,
Jack

I believe there is also another number under the knee knockers.

Why were the numbers ground out?
Perhaps Porsche NA could help via the CT vin

Does it have a salvage title because it was stolen & recovered (hence the ground off VIN) or wrecked beyond repair ?

The story as I know it. The car was bought used by previous owner. While still on the lot the vin plate in the trunk was drilled out. The dealership, Fairfield Porsche, and the mva issued a salvage vin and changed engine, transmission, body numbers but left the original pillar plate and vin sticker. They issued a Salvage title. My local Porsche dealer has put the car in the air and given it a thorough exam. They see no signs of damage at all. The car is remarkably clean and straight. Obviously, I would prefer a non-salvage title and the previous owner and his attorney have the mva willing to reissue the original vin if I locate a corresponding number on the car. Hence my search. Its been a long road...hope your suggestions help, and thanks again.

OK, today I have a little time to investigate. I pretty well stink with interior work. My experience is limited to stripping a car for racing...very little finesse involved. It appears perhaps this trim panel is attached with a series of nuts facing the front of the car. Is this correct...hate to spend a ton of time unfastening the wrong thing. So it feels like threaded studs molded into the trim panel with un-captured nuts to remove. Any help again appreciated.

Wow that's horrible I almost purchased a ny savage Nissan 240 it ended up my DMV worker caught it. For some reason Ny salvage cars are illegal to register in PA . The seller was trying to rip me off. Be careful and good luck jack944racer.

On the front side of the knee pad (front=toward the front end) feel for the studs and nuts. Studs are attached the knee pad. Remove the nuts ( I think 3 of them) and pull the knee pad off pulling toward the rear of the car. Very easy, don't be afraid.

Thanks Mark....That is what I THOUGHT I felt...just making sure. Ironic on the salvage vin...this car is in the nicest shape of anything I own. I'd hate to do something silly like break a trim piece. Help appreciated.

Thanks 911 sc. Evidently in maryland also...which is why we are trying to restore the original VIN and hunting for that verifiable ID. For complicated reasons that are understandable, I don't think the seller was aware of the extent of the complexities and has offered to refund the money if the VIN can't be put straight. But, I hope that it all works out...it's a beautifal and well preserved car.

Well, I got the knee pad off. Finally. I don't see any VIN or id numbers of any kind. I'm knocking off for the night to look for Snipe. They are in season around here they say. If anyone knows if this number was a plate or stamped into the metal itself, let me know.
Thanks.

Maybe I watch too many cop shows, but I think that grinding off VIN numbers is a felon's game. Sounds like a nice car that, for a while at least, got into the hands of some bad citizens. Too bad, because it looks like a very desireable 930. Good luck in sorting it all out.

The number under the knee pad is stamped into the metal.

There is also a vin by the smugglers box and also on the inside of the hood. But I think you made the right move.
