Does you car have "auto-heat" as opposed the just the flapper box levers? If so that is the spot for the cabin temperature sensor (a small, round slotted grille would have covered the hole) . . .

I've never seen the auto-heat sensor there. I've only seen it mounted in the headliner between the visors. That's where mine is... or was.

I have the auto-heat sensor and it is mounted between the sun visors, so that is not it.
Was this some add on of some previous owner?

No, no, no, folks, that is for the 3spd fan switch that operates the footwell blowers. The blowers are located behind the carpeted foot kick panels, 1 on the drivers side & 1 on the passenger side, below the dash.

Hmmm, I guess I don't have that option. That spot on my car is a blank, no hole.

On mine, a 1987, there is a cabin temp sensor in that spot, but not between the visors (this sensor even has its own, very small, electric fan). The same sensor, in almost the same spot, is also in my brother's 1986 951 (obviously, a different heater sysytem in that car) . . .

I guess the early cars had them between the visors and later where there.

Looks like this car origonally had nothing there and a previous owner drilled the hole for a light or switch.

Mine is an '84, and the foot well blower switch has always been there, the temp. sensor is up between the sun visors on mine. Different years apparently have different layouts.

The photo clearly shows a "factory" hole in the dash panel, it has not been drilled by an owner. If you look, the dash panel has a factory embossed circular indent around the through hole, for clearance for the knob.

Makes sense, Thanks Mark, and all for the help.
I will now look for a blower switch.

I don't think '78s have footwell blowers. The one '78 930 I have seen has the temp sensor between the visors.

I've seen the 3 position rotary footwell blower fan switch in that position on some euro cars before but I don't think that approx 1/4" slighty off center hole is factory.

The embossed ring in the plastic/vinyl dash is just like the one in a late eightees dash in between the cigarette lighter and fog light switch which is where the rear window defroster switch was in the early cars before they changed it to a push button switch and moved it down into the center console next to the emergency flasher button switch.
There is also an embossed rectangle to the left of the ignition switch in a late eightees car. Never seen what they were thinking of putting there and apparently never did.

If you remove the knob from any of the push/pull or rotary switches in a pre 1989 Porsche 911 dashboard you will see a large hole the same diameter as that embossed ring and Porsche used a weird round plastic nut with a flange around the edge about the diameter of a nickel that fit into the large hole to center and hold in the switch. These round plastic nuts have no wrench flats and instead they have 2 tiny holes in the top that need a spanner tool with 2 small points inserted into the holes to turn it. I use small snap ring pliers and they work good for that and the plastic nut is hidden under the knob and flush with the surrounding plastic dash when snugged down.

If there had been a regular rotary switch in that approximately 1/4" hole the nut and washer that holds it on would have left a squish mark in the vinyl and I see no mark from a nut tightened down on the plastic/vinyl, I only see loose vinyl flash around the edges from a quickly drilled hole.
There is no steel backing for a switch behind the vinyl there. It's only plastic vinyl with about 1/8" of dense firm foam rubber bonded to the back and a switch mounted in it would be very flimsy.

Trivial, but thats the way I see it and I've worked on ALOT of cars.

Here is a picture that shows the switch in place. Again, please know that things changed over the years, so it would be best to look at a owners manual for your year car, or look at an another actual car of the exact same year. Mine is an '84...so your results may differ.

My wiper delay is in between the clock & the speedo on the top. The sample photo I supplied, shows the wiper delay knob as well, look real carefully & you can see it.

F.Y.I. this photo is not of my car, just a sample picture off the web.

My wife thinks it is for the rear fog light, could that be it?
I have the red rear fog light and I do not know how to turn it on.

That's because you are some kind of idiot that copies and pastes random quotes from other posts in order to try and slip in a link to some bogus website!

Dude, the quote I cited is from a spammer that copied and pasted a previous comment - not a real member! There has been a flood of them in the last couple of weeks and I reported this one like I report every one I see. Check his other posts if you don't believe me!
