Your Thoughts On Running a Turbo Blanket?

Guys - Any of you running a turbo blanket? What are your thoughts or experiences. Trying to think of ways of managing that heat!

There are many past threads and posts regarding this subject (general consensus is to not use them as they overheat the oil/bearing cartridge). Here is a three page thread -

Ooops should have done a search thanks Ronnie, informative thread.

Ronnie is the search king. Ronnie, join us over at corner-carvers!
Actually, if you take it to the extreme, the technical board might as well be closed to new posts. Other than project updates, everything has been discussed 20x if you search. I hope no EMP ever goes off over Wayne's data center or we'll all be going back to the dealer for everything.

I'm running the GT35 and warped two rear reflectors from the heat. I started with a blanket which fell apart. Now I have a composite shield of some sort which Turbo Kraft sold me. Works great.

Where do I accept my award (and what is it, a cookie)?! :D

What is "corner-carvers" (guess I should do a search)? :p

Yasin:

The issue of controlling that heat is never ending. I changed the turbo
location on the Sled using 934 headers and added a zork and separate
waste gate pipe. I did a lot of searching to find ways to shield the engine
and not set the fiberglass back bumper on fire.

Nearly all 934, 935, and recently 993 Gt2 added a small curved heat
shields attached to the top two turbo flange bolts that wraped up and
over the hot housing. With good air flow they helped keep the heat
directed toward the rear.

I added an old 935 tail that comes out over the rear bumper and
this helps direct air down over the exhaust. I also have an old bumper
I bought at a Tweeks swap meet over 20 years ago, high dollar $45.00
investment. It is vented to get more heat directed out the rear and I
lined it with heat blanket material.

Just thought I'd add a little food for thought.

Where

Where did you get the heat blanket material...? and how did you attach it to the fiberglass bumper?

Slownrusty....I have a blanket that I ordered and put on my turbo...(it finally stopped smoking). It was a T3/T4 blanket...I have a K29 turbo...and it barely fit....barely....just fit for what I needed it for basically...
The guys over at mayo performance say that its a good thing...So...I will look into it more as time goes on.

Doherty:

The heat shield is by Thermo-Tec and it has adhesive on it. You can get
it for up to 3000*. I think Summit Racing also carries it.

Nice work !!!!!

It should be just fine, if it doesn't stay we'll both be in the
same boat and work it out together.

Is that your rear bumper in the lounge room, Cole ? :D

cole930 07-27-2012 08:57 AM

Vas:

Hey mate hope all is great with you !!!!!

The lounge you refer to is actually my basement, loving refered to by
my wife, as "The Pit", "The Hole", or David's dump. I am always down there.
I have a walkout basement with outside parking, full kitchen, bedroom,
office, bath, rec room, and the "Sled" garage:

is ever dirty or out of place:

Yes !!! that is my 20 + year old rear bumper and I also have the new
modified front bumper on.

Cole, your basement pad and custom intercooler look fantastic! I hope your intercooler fits on smooth now, it sure looks fine. The welding and anodizing looks perfect.

If the glue on the heat sheild stuff gets cooked, dries out, and it starts to peel and lift you can glue it back down with high temp silicone gasket sealer and it should stay if the surfaces are cleaned with wash laquer thinner first. The red stuff glues and holds up to heat best.

cole930 07-27-2012 10:53 AM

Mr. Jim:

Thanks bud, I always appreciate your input.

Big thanks for the plan B on the glue.

Chris and I spent a lot of time measuring and comparing his test car to mine.
We were trying to keep the IC aft as much as possible. I also had him add the
50mm Bov flange for me. Looks good. I ordered the hoses, clamps, and coupler
I need to hook the IC to the Turbo inlet last nite.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1343409974.jpg

I got the MTX-l and SSI-4 installed and wired but haven't programmed yet.
I'm going to be monitoring RPM, Boost, AFR, and Control Pressure. I sent
my CIS and new adjustable WUR to Larry at Flow tech and he cleaned and
flow tested the CIS and then put it on the flow bench with the new WUR
and set it up for me. Hoping all that will help on start up.

The new bumpers are on and my friend, and master painter, and I built
some custom rockers and got them final fit early this week and they will
be painted this weekend. The Tail is the only thing left. When the IC gets
here next week we can make the modifications to the tail for a proper fit
and then get it painted.

I'm fast running out of excuses for not having this Old Girl on the road.

Wow!

Cole, Great to see your car is coming together.

What kind of front bumper is that? Like the look

Miguel Antonett 07-27-2012 02:44 PM

+1..... WOW.

About the blanket = don't.

Steve Hummel 07-27-2012 03:18 PM

Great idea but...

Blanket is great for drag racing...but not so good for turbo longevity on the street or road race track. Passive heat shielding is better than active heat shielding because the only thing that can go wrong with passive is that it falls off. Active has to be powered, that consumes power and what is the failure mode when the electric motor blows a fuse or stops running? I use a GT Racing RSR rear bumper so there is plenty of room around the turbo but if there was not I would use aluminum heat shielding and Thermotec on the "soft" fiberglass parts.

If you want more power "on the cheap" run a full throttle cutoff switch to stop the alternator from charging the battery. Mount the switch on the floor so it activates under full power only (foot to the floor)...you might be surprised. In any race car we build we always run an alternator cutoff switch (if legal) for that extra hp...one reason why some cars are more equal than others...make sure that you have a good battery!

Best,

Steve
