3.0l turbo engine into longhood?

I was wondering what the challenges would be in dropping a 3.0l turbo into my '70S, with 901 trans? Has anyone done this before, as my search did not turn anything up?

Should physically bolt in. What year 930 engine?

You will need a different 225mm flywheel, new oil tank (big problem here since the later tank will not fit the through-71 chassis without cutting. The Type 911 transmission would not be happy with the big torque of a 930 motor. I would suggest a 915 at a minimum. If you drive very "easy" (this does not mean slow) the Type 911 would last for a while.

You would need to adapt the fuel system. This means duel fuel pumps for stock CIS to maintain pressure and flow rates. The stock MFI pump will not match pressure.

there are some electronics differences. Most notably is the later 6pin CDI is required (or MSD) as the distributor uses a magnetic pickup, not points. There are, however, other ways around this.

YOu would probably want to upgrade the suspension. The 930 motor is considerably heavier than the 2.2S. Increased torsion bars at a minimum.

It has been done but is not a straight bolt-in.

What is wrong with the 911S engine? Just looking for more? given the current value of an early S I would be hesitant to make this swap. Certainly would be a very fun car to drive.

Thanks Jamie... the engine is a '77. Nothing is wrong with my "S" engine, but like you suggest, I'm looking for more. Fortunately, (or unfortunately) my car is a non-numbers matching, theft recovered vehicle (missing original VIN - but I luv her, just the same)... so it's pretty much a blank canvas, as far as I'm concerned.

Wow a blank canvas. I like that.
This would be a simple effort if you did things like returning oil from scavenge to the breather cover instead of the tank, used msd, swapped pump for Bosch 044, and used a 915. I love to follow projects like this. Good luck.

Jamie - I've upgraded the suspension with 27mm torsion bars, adjustable spring plates, and Koni adjustable shocks (yellow). Do you think that is enough?

Derek, The stock 930 had 26mm torsion bars. A 27 with the 930 motor would ride close to stock. 28mm would be better if you like the current ride comfort/stiffness ratio.

Sounds like you have a good platform to build this car. It can be done without modifications so that you can return it to original if you ever want to sell.

I have been assembling parts. I am going to try to build a 2.2 turbo motor.

update?

Unfortunately, I've had a bit of a setback as I lost out on the engine I was wanting to buy... thanks for the bump, and I'll let you know as soon as some progress is made.
