Advice needed for secondary oil cooler - 964 (965) Turbo
Afternoon chaps,
While I'm waiting for parts to be modified/delivered for my EFI conversion, I'm turning my attention to the car itself and getting it ready for the re-installation. This weekends job is to remove the oil thermostat, lines and cooler for a thorough clean. While I''m at it, I'm debating whether to install a second oil cooler. Makes sense while I've got the car in pieces, and it's devoid of most of its oil. This is a road car only, no track use, and I'm here in the UK, so not mega Arizona/Florida/Texas heat....but....the engine spec is going to be hugely bigger than the stock lump that came out....somewhere near 480-500hp (hopefully). I'm also going to retain the A/C, so any solution needs to also cater for the LHS condenser rad. I've been trawling through the various threads and DIY's on here and p-car...some very good stuff, one in particular that BoxxerSix and Bill Verbung have written-up. But, this is for non-A/C RS America cars (or cars with AC removed). So....has anyone done this by fitting something like a wide 14row cooler that sits directly behind the aperture in the Turbo's bumper cover? ![]() This seems like a perfect location; no complication with having to squeeze it into the LHS wheel arch, it'd use shorter oil lines and it'd sit directly in the airstream, so no fan needed. It appears I can hang it underneath from the aluminium bumper units as well? Seems too obvious....am I missing something? I should add that I've also got RS Style front air ducts, which a previous owner has done a rubbish job of fitting: ![]() ...well, they're fitted ok, but done for cosmetics rather than cooling, with only a 1" hole cut into the backbox for the original fog lamps, to allow air through...why bother?!?! ![]() ....I'll be buying some duct hose and modifying them to be useful, feeding air to the oil and AC rads) Whatever option I go with, I want this to remain stock looking, no ugly fabricated ducts (other than discrete ones behind the bodywork to ensure airflow goes through the cooler)...will probably even make sure the cooler is painted black instead of ally. Thanks guys Spencer.

Kenny,
With your climate and not racing the car, I don't think you'll need the extra cooling. I live in Georgia (hot), am EFI and make your stated power goals and have no problems with oil temp. The car has been setup like this for about 7 years now. Granted, I avoided driving when it was 105 F out a few months ago... but I regularly drive aggressively in the North Georgia mountains with several modern, fast cars, and have zero issues. Ambient temps range from 60 F to 90 F while out on the drives. Best, John |

Hey John,
Ah, that's really interesting and exactly the sort of feedback I was after, thank you....maybe I am pre-empting a problem that isn't going to be there!! One thing I will look at, is getting the EFI management to control the oil cooling fan - the MBE setup I'm using could even drive the fan motor directly (it can drive up to about 50A of ancilliaries), although I'll probably still switch it via the relay. We can only dream of 105degF in the UK.....it gets to 80 and people start thinking it's hot! About 90...*maybe* 95 at an absolute push, once every 5 summers, is about our max ![]() Cheers Spencer.

This is what I did, keeping the OEM valance and rubber lip. The Setrab oil cooler is right between the bumper and the tub; the only mod was to cut about an inch of the bumber back aluminum rib and the length of the cooler ~ 18" to allow the cooler to fit. The cooler has a 1.5" of clearance to the tub - more than ample gap for air flow w/o fan. I never see temps go over 215* even during track events here in AL.

Thanks Miguel, loving the colour of your 930!...there's constantly running a car restoration programme on TV over here in the UK, on one of the minority channels...one particular episode was to restore a very early 928 (it may have been an original pre-S 928, cant remember...it had teledials, so I guess it was), which they did a complete respray on, back to its original chocolate brown metallic, similar to yours?....it looked fantastic, whetted my appetite to get a 928 as a daily runner
