So it seems my alternator decided it quit. No two week notice!

Check it out.
On the highway for about an hour.
Noise coming from engine pull over and shut down.

Not sure wtf it is but video confirms it.

Damn fan isn't spinning for nothing.
Belt is burning on crankshaft.

I'm figuring it's the alternator but any other thoughts?
I'm new to Porsches in general. But my trailer is in the way to pick me up.

Sure seems to be the culprit. A loose fan belt would of course prevent the fan from turning as well, but that God-awful noise sure sounds like a fried alternator bearing.

Does the fan bolt right to the alternator?

I haven't torn into one of these before. But it seems I will be.

The fan is wobbly but got it on the trailer and headed home.

It's more like the alternator bolts into the center of the fan (at least that's the way I think of it). It's an easy enough DIY job. Maybe 3-4 hours. The only part I ran into trouble with was pressing the alternator out of the center of the fan assembly, itself. So I removed the entire fan/alternator assembly, took it to my local P-car shop and had them press it out and replace the alternator with a rebuilt one. IIRC you need the special wrench in the frunk toolkit (in case that's lost) to unbolt the fan assembly.

Your alternator is toast. The fan mounts on the alternator shaft. It's not hard to replace. Take a pic of the 3 wire sets attached to the back before removing them so you know where they go when putting it back together.

Yes, the fan is lightly pressed onto the shaft of the alt... unbolt the strap that goes around the fan housing, , and pull the housing forward enough to unbolt the air shroud from the back of the alt. You will then need to unhook the wires off of the back of the alt. Then pull the unit out of the car.

Once on the bench, look at the front of the fan, near the pulley area. You will see 12 or so small holes cast into the fan. (they are open holes and go all the way through). pick two holes directly across from one another and tap holes with a thread tap. ( I cant remember what size, but 6mm sticks in my head for some reason)...
Find or buy 2 2" long bolts or screws and threadinto the holes that you just created threads in. Take turns screwing eack bolt in equally, and tthe bolts will bottom on the alt, and as you screw them in, the fan will be pushed off of the shaft. DO NOT try to pry fan off the shaft, you will break a blade (or more)......

Sounds more difficult then it is, and is the easiest way to take the fan off the shaft, without damaging it.....

I just replaced my alternator a couple weeks ago. I put in a freshly rebuilt 160 amp Valeo alternator. The system charges really good now, even at idle speed with 4 AC fans and the headlights on.
I took pics of it before and during installation. I also doubled up on the thick power and ground wires.

You can see the plastic air guide cone pulled back from the back of the alternator while attaching the wires in two of the pics.
I put permatex dielectric grease on the wire terminals after installing them so they don't corrode down the road. They can get wet and eventually corrode when driving in heavy rain as water drips in the air louvers in the tail and gets sucked into the fan along with the airflow.

Well after reading a little it seems the rebuilt units are not that great. Where are you guys getting them?

The last guy I knew in my town that rebuilt alternators shut down shop.

This is more like a bearing failure have to see how the shaft and everything looks.

I'll post another video here shortly see the fan wobble.
