Which Turbo to Use?
Can you tell me if this FS:Garrett GT3071R Turbo turbo would be adequate for a good-weather-drive-it-on-nice-weekend-days 1980 930?
It would replace the stock 3LDZ and would be installed along with a new headers, Borla Muffler and (probably) Leask WUR. Following fairly soon will be an upgraded intercooler. My ultimate performance-level aspirations are fairly conservative; somewhere in the 400/hp range, which I think it attainable with the mods I'm looking at(???). On the turbo subjet though, I've puzzled and puzzled til my puzzler was sore, but it seems the more I read the less certain I am as to which direction to go. Given current budget constraints, I'm leaning toward going the local Craigslist route where, not surprisingly, there is a dearth of direct-fit options. I'm fine with fabbing a new bracket and (within reason) a little tin cutting and oil line adapting if it means I don't have to shell out $1,500-$2,000 right now. I'm new to the whole NA thing so I could really use a little help. Thanks! Norm |
I believe a few peeps here have used the GT30 with success. My only reservation would be the .63AR on a T3. Boost will be with gas pedal (very quick spooling) I'd imagine but it may be severely hp limiting on top end.

I think the turbo on my engine is a modified garrett GT35. The Gt35 has been used in a lot of high HP builds.
You should also consider RarlyL8 (active member on these forums) for your CIS and WUR mods and needs. |

I've found several references indicating that the 1980 ROW CIS should be sufficient in trying to reach 400hp (combined with the WUR, headers, Borla muffler, and (soon, I hope) a Rarly8 intercooler. Before installing any of these, a good AFR meter will be in place, as well as a where-the-clock-is-now boost gauge. |

Norm,
The GT3071 has a 53.1mm inducer, and looking at the compressor map, it supports about 47 lbs/min. This would reach your 400hp goals, but with so many China imitations out there, make sure you are purchasing from a reputable dealer. The 35R bumps up to a 61mm compressor and can support up to 600+hp. I, however, prefer the Turbonetics brand of turbos, and they can be customized to your setup. My Blue 911 runs 61mm billet units, and can be had at a cost effective price. Feel free to PM me for details. Thanks. |
Looks like I'll be going with the tried & true K27. Thanks for the deal, Philip, I can hardly wait to replace the 3LDZ!

Bisimoto What clutch do you use? for that power?

If one looks for a very efficient compressor with superb spoolup and does not want to sell kidney for a GT/X series Garrett, I wouldn't use anything but a nice Holset HX40 Super with #16 twin-scroll turbine housing.
And it is actually better than GT30R or GT35R. The blue line is Holset HX40, red is GT3076R. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0vsHx40rpm.jpg |
