Turbo 996 question
 

I have an 87 930 and love it and will keep it forever but I've been looking at a 996 turbo lately and thought I might find some advise here.
I posted a similar question on the 996 board and although this is the 930 section I think someone will be able to set me straight.
The turbo 996 has a different engine than the na 911, that I know but I thought that the turbo's had no IMS.
Does a 996 turbo have an IMS ?

All model year 1997-2008 Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models can suffer from IMS failures, with exception of Turbo, GT2, or GT3 models.

IMS is the intermediate shaft. This is the layshaft that runs off the crank to drive the cams. All 911s have them.

However, the 996 turbo does not use the same engine case design as the M96. The M96 came in Boxster, Cayman and Carrera displacements and trim. The Turbo, GT3 and GT2 engines are all based on the 993 case originally developed for the 964. This has a very different internal structure and does not have the same IMS bearing issues.

The issue is that the end bearing on the IMS shaft was designed to not need lubrication during its lifetime. However, they have been known to leak, fail, sieze, etc which quickly changes cam timing and then the engine goes, well you know. Boom.

I would love to have a 996TT as a daily driver. Amazingly capable cars. Fast and sure-footed.

996tt is a great car as a dd.

Basically the 996TT is bulletproof.
It is the most reliable car I own.

996 Turbo is an awesome car, on my list or a 997TT as a DD in the future, amazing value too.
