Hagerty Insurance
Some of you may have been following me on the purchase of a 80's model 930. I have an 88 911 turbo inbound currently. I have owned an 86 previously and insured through Hagerty. I went to insure this new purchase through Hagerty and was declined. Instead of going through my agent, I went direct through their website over the weekend. I called today to ask a question and was told I was not the type of client they insure. When asked how much I intend to drive my car, I stated 1000 mi. per month on average. Was not acceptable to them. The rep stated club drives or cruises were ok., casual weekend use not. Club drives and event were ok. Nothing like I have ever heard about the company.
Am I missing something here. Perfect driving record the last 10 years, no bombs. The rep was almost cold. Any suggestions on another option? Just thought I would pass this along. |

I used Hagerty a few years back. I am now using Grundys less expensive and seemingly the same coverage.

Hagerty provides collector car insurance not daily driver insurance. 1,000 miles a month is not a secondary/collector car.

I used to use Hagerty, but now my mainstream insurance company does limited mileage agreed value coverage for about the same price. As I recall, the limit is 3k miles a year, and they do check now and then.

my two 930's have been sitting the last couple of years. when I renewed my policy with hagerty I asked if I had banked about 10,000 miles ( I had 5000 mi. per year policy). they said it was no longer limited to 5,000 per year I could drive as much as I wanted.they didn't ask how many miles I had put on them or had on them. they said the 5000 mi. was only for ca. residents.
I don't know if this all true just passing on the conversation I has when I renewed. mike |

The State you live in may play a role. You might want to contact your State Insurance Commissioner’s Office. The Insurance Company sets some of the rules but not all.

Try contacting American Modern Home Insurance Co. Like someone mentioned the car can't be your primary car, must have another DD, and it must be kept in a garage. However, American Modern does offer coverage for over 10k miles per year. The other thing they offer is a "9-5" option that allows you to drive it to work.

Hagerty is inconsistent. I have a friend who has a couple of collectors (not P cars) with them and he has no limitations. I talked to them about my 3 911's and they were more expensive than West Bend for the 930 and SC by $1000/yr, but $400 cheaper for the 997. But regardless, they wouldn't take my business because my wife's beloved MDX is a 2007 and each adult has to own a DD that is less than 5 years old. I think they make it up as they go.

This discussion just blows me away (and blows, period). Depending on the time of day, the state you live in, and the mood of the salesman you may get an entirely different answer and/or quote. Tells you how much latitude insurance salesmen have to line their pockets. I hate the whole concept of insurance, and this just feeds fuel to my ever growing dislike for the topic. Trust is not a word that's synonymous with insurance. Now let's review Obamacare for a real kick in the pants.

I have Hagerty on all my P-Cars (except the chump car). I have unlimited mileage / use. The only daily driver in my family newer than 1997 is my 2011 Tundra.
I am also covered if I loan out my cars - I loaned my Slant to a friend this spring so he could take his brother with Lou Gehrig's out for an evening of Tom Foolery - I called Haggerty first and they said, "no problem, provided my friend had another vehicle insured as a DD". All in all, they are great to deal with though I have yet to have a claim with them...

Still waiting on vehicle to arrive. Left Indianapolis on Monday on enclosed truck. Thought I would hear from someone today. Anyway, insurance has been an issue. I thought Hagerty was out, so contacted JC Taylor, but everything had to be done through mail. Nothing electronic. Called my agent back, asked her to figure something out. In the meantime, called Hagerty back and asked again about insuring. Was strictly told no errands or around town. This vehicle is not a primary car, weekends only if that much. Limited mileage, did not matter.
Customer service reps were almost cold to me. Told them it was a weekend car only. They were having no part of it, not what they want. I respect that and moved on. Ended up on my primary insurance through Met. They took stated value that I gave them with full coverage. Cost is 3 x Hagerty, but insured. May shop it when I get a little time. Thank you again for the input. Will post pics when I am in possession of car. |

I had Hagerty on five cars, 1,000 yearly limit. Had a kid back into the Lotus, got his drivers licence number and insurance. Kid was in military, Hagerty couldn't find him, they started giving me crap, wanted mileage numbers on all my cars. I finally cancelled the claim and paid the repairs out of pocket. They were fine until a claim.

Hagerty had the best price of the four websites I got a quote from. So I called them first wanting to buy a policy for my '84 911 that I drive 2000 miles a year. During the question and answer session I made the mistake of saying I occaisionally drive to my small town hardware store on a sunny day if the roads are dry. I was promtly rejected because driving to the hardware store is an "errand". They don't insure cars used for running errands.
I got a policy from State Farm for less than half the Hagerty quote. They offer antique car coverage if it's over 25 years old. The discounts are applied based on annual mileage with thresholds at 500 and 3500. With no usage restrictions and good claims support.

The key to all this cost stuff, is how many cars are licensed at your residents vs how many drivers are at that same address.
That gives the agent and the carrier a better idea of the intended use of the vehicle...statistically speaking. Mark |
