How many slantnose made ???
Hey guys.
I would like to know a many ''option 505/506'' cars were made from 1981 to 1989. In other words, how many factory slantnoses were produced for the entire world ?? Thanks. Nicolas Edit : about 960, thanks !! |
Hi Nico 911,
So the slant-nose was only available as a special option from 1981 ... 1981=Light in bumper) Don't know build-number that year. The first slant-nose ever made was on 16 of July 1981 and had Vin 93ZBS000619 But those where different so what In 1987 you could order a standard slant-nose (a state of original option) M506. So here we go; 1982 = 38 1983 = 35 1984 = 34 1985 = 44 1986 = 52 1987 = 33 TOTAL = 236 Standard slant-nose from 1987 1987 = 200 (930S-N VS) 1988 = 278 (930S-N VS) 1989 = 147 (930S-N VS) TOTAL = 625 Hope this helps ;) |
Factory Slant Nose Production Numbers
Those numbers sound about right, consistent with the estimates found in the following article:

Hi Nicolas, In 1987 you had the original factory one (506), so you could get a slant-nose without the option slant-nose. all previous slant-noses was a normal 930 but with a factory slantnose option. So for the previous one (505) it's hard to tell that it's an original factory option. You can let it check by the Porsche factory true your Porsche dealer. Or the original bill or order. For the later one (506 / 1987-1989) it's easy to know if you deal with an original slant-nose by checking the Cars vin. Model 930 S-N - motor 930/66 - gearbox 930/36 - vin WP0ZZZ93ZHS050001 TO 0087 - engine 68Hxxxx Model 930 S-N VS - motor 930/68 - gearbox 930/36 - vin WP0ZZZ93ZHS050001 TO 0087 - engine 68Hxxxx This is for the normal coupe, let me know if it's a Targa or Cabrio It is not easy because to much to explain. You could order a 930S from 03/1987 ..... But if you not shore then give me some vin and other numbers and i'll find out more. It is hard to explain because I'm living near Brussels :) |
There seems to be a little misinformation being exchanged on this thread.
First off, the 505/506 option did not exist prior to 1986 (model year 1987). ALL factory slantnose cars prior to that were Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes optioned) cars and carried no option labels stating so on the vehicle description label located on the underside of the front bonnet. Simply put, the VIN and engine SN will tell you absolutely nothing in terms of its authenticity. It takes a great deal of investigative work on the car in question to determine if it is truly a Sonderwunsch Flachbau (1981-1986 MY). 1987-1989 Model year cars are much easier to ascertain as the genuine article. The bonnet label will state 505 or 506 and Porsche has records of VIN's built with the option. But even here, there are some 505/506 cars that went through the Exclusive Programme that had some special "tweeking" by Porsche technicians with features that were not on the options list. For the most accurate information we have been able to come up with so far, we've put together a thread that hopefully, will give you some basis to work from. There is a very good book by Peter Morgan entitled Original Porsche 911 that gives you an idea of the production numbers of various Porsche models through the years.
A very useful research tool. |

It has the option sticker stating 505 on the front bonnet, among other options. One thing that makes me wonder is the fact that the car doesn't have painted fuchs, like most slant noses are. Also, the car is missing it's original warranty manual. I mean, the car has only 29 000 miles... My '85 Carrera has all it's books, even the window sticker... I guess the best way to know is ordering a certificate of authenticity from Porsche. The seller also told me there's a few things proving it's factory : wings in the flares are made of wood and there's only one motor for the pop up headlights (tells me fakes have one by headlight). BS or facts... ? I don't know so far. Nicolas |

930 VS MOTOR 930/68 GEARBOX 930/36 VIN WP0JB093HS050001 TO 5000 ENGINE NR 68H0001 AND ON So if the car is a slant-nose it's was ordered with an slant -nose option ... so not the one from 87 to 89 that was a standard slant -nose ... |

I'm loosing it here... I'll do some home works to get it ! |

If you pull the carpet down on each side of the trunk and inspect the mechanism that operates the light, you should be able to tell from that as well. It should look factory, not drilled out or cobbled up. The fact that the allows are not color coded and the warranty manual is not available shouldn't be a deterrence. Good Luck.. |
Thanks onboost.

My Ultra Smith/RUF Conversion has the wooden slats in the 1/4, and the single headlight motor. The only quality difference to me is that I am sure that Porsche dipped the slant fenders and it appears that RUF did not. I have a few spots of cancer showing up on my slant fenders but none any where else (the rest is Stock Body Parts).
I would guess that the other reputable conversion houses did that as well. If you are not concerned about the factory slant ( ie... not speculating on value) and the seller does not have it priced as a collectible factory slant then you should be ok with the purchase. If their is "collectible" tax applied by the seller, then they should have the documentation to prove it, not just a code on the bonnet. |

Is your car a US or ROW 930? Although I don't know the details of your car, I would assume that Ultrasmith did some electronics owork on your car.. hidden radar, stereo, maybe some seats, and that Ultimate Motorwerks (I think) in N. Jersey did the Ruf mods as they were still the official US Ruf dist around 86/87.. the two companies did a lot of work together and did excellent work. Yes, there were a number of reputable conversion houses that did slant conversion in the day.. two of the most noteable were Backburn & Daly whose work was so good that Porsche N/A allowed a few of the dealers to actually have the conversion cars sit on the showroom floor alongside other new cars in stock. Blackburn & Daly at the time would only do the conversions on New vehicles. The other was Alsn Johnson Racing who actually was allowed to sell slant nose conversion parts over the counter. These were factory parts as they were a factory authorized Porsche dealer. They did however offer the factory slant front fenders in 2 styles w/two price points.. factory lights with the single mechanism, and aftermarket Mazda motored headlights with your choice of round or square lights, just as many of the conversion shops offered. The difference was theirs was on factory fenders. And yes, the owner should have better documentaion, but not all owners gave a hoot.. they just wanted a cool car and had the money to get it. That being said, a code on the bonnet of the later cars should be a good indication of what it is.. and of course the COA or a phone call to Porsche with the Vin should clarify. |

I have 2 factory 1987 slantnose cars and at least one of them has foam core rear brake veins. I think they used wood in the beginning but can't find out what year the changeover is.
The reason I know one is foam core is because it is broke. :( |

Do you still have both pieces of the slat? If so, there's a product out there that does a pretty remarkable job of repairing plastic material. It's called Plast-Aid and gives you a couple of repair options. You can create a mold and pour the material in to give you a factory-like duplicate. Second method is to use Plast-Aid as a bonding agent to join the broken pieces. I can testify to its effectiveness. We use it in our business for repairing PVC pool plumbing. Handles up to 600 PSI. |
I do have them Dave. A couple are damaged on another factory slant I bought to restore.
|
Where there any factory slantnoses produced in 1986? I can't seem to find any. Thanks
