What is the correct fill/level check plug for the 930 4speed tranny
 
I had been noticing small drops of transmission fluid occasionally on my garage floor so decided to check my transmission fluid level on my 81 930. Per the pictures below, my understanding was that plug A was the fill/level checking plug. So I opened A and surprisingly a lot of fluid came out. I thought I would have to stick my finger in to check the level. Either A is not the correct checking plug, or the previous owner filled with the car not leveled or through one of the other ports on the other side which appear to be higher. Is the correct plug to check with A which is on the left side of the tranny, or one of the others (B-E) on the other side?

Definately A ( tapered thread), the others are plugs of the shifting springs. B, C and E are for FW gears (all the same), D (different) is for BW reverse gear

I thought so, thanks. Is it better to fill a little extra by tilting the car/tranny, as I guess the PO did?

No, as the overfilled amount will be thrown out of the breather opening and end up all over the place (like happened to me when I overfilled the transmission while it was out of the car).

At least you know it isn't underfilled :)
Yeah, let some out so the front and rear seals don't possibly start weeping and what Ronnie said.
It's easy to get it right now by letting some out while the car's on level ground.

Right :D I thought my newly rebuilt transmission was already leaking terribly, but noticed a lot of the oil was up high, so I removed the fill plug and fluid came pouring out of it! And I was the one who put the oil in it while on a work bench.

Already did. That's probably why I was getting some drippage before...
