Motor Mount Washers/Spacers

I set about changing my motor mounts in my 930. Started with the RHS since it looked the easiest. When I removed the center M12 bolt and the large washers (items #12 in the PET) I found an extra washers under the mount. The PET shows one seat (dished washer p/n 901 305 311 00) under the mount only. The extra washer/spacer I found is about 1/4in thick and obviously home made. The LHS also has the same size spacer under the motor mount. The effect of the spacer is too lower the engine/tranny assembly down by the width of the spacer or about 1/4in.

The previous owner couldn't tell me what they were for, so they were added awhile ago maybe when the intercooler was changed.

I look all around the engine and especially around the Kokeln Intercooler to see if they are present to solve interference problems with the rear spoiler/engine cover; but can't spot anything obvious.

On problem with use of the spacer and the stock M12 x 95mm bolt is that fewer threads are engaged in the engine bracket. I know that others have questioned whether there should be a nut on a longer-than-stock bolt in addition to the threads in the bracket.

As far as I can tell this configuration has in excess of 20K miles on it.

So the questions are:

1) Can anyone offer insights into why the spacer? Is it a Kokeln Intercooler clearance issue or something else?

2) If I assume that whoever added the 1/4 in spacers did it to solve a problem (which I can't see) should I just leave them alone and source new longer bolts? I know that 100mm and 120mm are both available from online suppliers. Can anyone tell me the effective of a slightly lower engine/tranny?

3) Should I remove the spacers, bolt it up and see if clearance problems show up?

4) Are the stock washers (item #12) mounted dished side away from the mount? The diagram in the PET doesn't show this detail.

Thanks for reading this thread,
Dennis

The concave dish side of the washers go toward the rubber motor mounts top and bottom.
I have a Kokeln intercooler in my '87 with no extra spacer on the bolt and there's no clearance problem anywhere. I would remove those spacers you have and see if there's some kind of problem without them. Only takes around 15 minutes with a floor jack under the motor to try it out.

A longer bolt for more thread engagement would probably be a good idea if you keep the spacers. And use antisieze or grease on the bolt threads so it doesn't get stuck in the cross bar threads after a while.

I removed the spacers and the clearance problem is with the rear window wiper motor colliding with the intercooler. The motor mounting bolts are slotted; however when the motor is adjusted to clear the IC then the drive mechanism binds.

So I need to decide whether to delete the wiper and motor or put the spacers back in and order some longer bolts. I might try and modify the motor cover to clear.

Mine has the wiper motor and it comes close but doesn't touch the Kokeln. They did a pretty good job of designing and making that intercooler. Just wish the cast aluminum end tanks were thinner wall and not as heavy.

Maybe you can move the wiper motor or it's mount somehow.

The wiper motor cover has been "dented" to try and make clearance. I haven't had much time to play with the linkage and motor position to see if I can make it work - that's next.

I have a Kokeln also and it just clears the wiper motor. Maybe take the intercooler off and cut the spacers that support it a little and refit the intercooler. JMHO

Fortunately all it took was making the linkage straight and adjusting the rod connecting the motor and arm for the correct length. The motor cover and the mounting bracket both just clear the IC.

Thanks for the help.....
