efi install time
Hello all; I have decided to install a SDS efi system on my new build. After many frustrating hrs of tuning, and not being able to achieve numbers that I would be happy with on my CIS, this is a no brainer. I am going to go with both fuel and ignition control, and ditch the distributer. Can anyone give me areal time estimate on what their conversion took to install? I've gone through the install procedure, and think that waiting for parts might be the biggest delay. Any tips greatly appreciated. Philip

I am curious what number you were hoping for on CIS?

Phillip, I'll PM you my phone number. Feel free to call me and we can discuss what I've encountered. Easier to talk than type... for me.

SDS is a good choice. And Jim2's support is very nice.
Here you'll find my SDS conversion: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/580883-another-efi-conversion.html It looks your engine specs are close to mine (except displacement), so I can share fuel and ignitiona map with you (Jim will too for sure) BTW, support from SDS is nice too! So we wait for first pics and description of your conversion

I have a handy template that Jim made for me to drill the holes for the crank pulley pick-up. Let me know if you need it. I am slowly proceeding on my SDS EFI conversion. The tech help from SDS is great.
Tom

template
Hey Tom; a copy of the template would be awsome. I'll send you my email. The pulley was also a area which I was scratching my head about. I was thinking of maybe a aftermarket pulley as opposed to the stock one. I would also like to retain my AC. Philip

Take an aluminum aftermarket pulley like smartracing, easy to drill and enough beef for the magnets. The SDS manual describes process very good and understandable too

Rothsport Racing has some nice looking pulleys with mounts for trigger wheels. They also make a nice crank sensor bracket.

Nice, but useless for SDS setup, no trigger wheel but magnets and sensor behind the pulley

Just did an SDS install with CoP and CDI ign.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/671595-my-efi-m-w-cdi-cop-install.html Jim2 and proffigher have some excellent posts up that are far more detailed than my summary to outline the process. As far as the crank pulley, I did mine using hand a hand drill and a set of verniers. For the pick up get some 10mm or 3/8" aluminimun bar and follow what the other guys have done for mounting. All in all, I reckon I spent a a good few hours a week (say about 5-7) over 3 months to complete it, but I did add the extra time of sourcing, installing a CDI and CoP set up and I tend to take my time. If you go with SDS's pre-packaged wasted coil set up it would go a lot quicker. The most critical part is getting the crank magnets and pick up done properly, but simple hand tools is really all you need. Going EFi is also a good time to strip out the engine CIS harness, remove the run on relay and fuel pump yellow relay and simplify the wiring somewhat and there are many hours to burn doing that kind of thing (while I'm in there stuff). I have got a few PMs about cost. Using Aussie $, assuming parity with USD, from memory it came out around: SDS EM5-F with ign output mods for CDI $1450 2nd hand M&W CDI $650 Coils and harness connectors (ebay) ~$250 Misc parts such as TB mods, TPS, filters, wiring supplies etc ~$450 Tech Edge Wideband ~$400 Injector blocks and rails (clewett) $1300 500cc injectors $450 Carerra FPR (ebay) $100 fuel lines and fittings ~$400 Overall shipping on items (most came from UK/USA) $500 Total = $5950 - around $1500 for my old CIS stuff. If someone charged you for their labour it would probably be around 9-10k plus dyno.

Lots of good...
info here! I would like to find a double pulley to retain my AC. Got the SDS kit ordered today. Now I need to start sourcing accessories. Anyone have the barrel nuts for the carrera manifold? Philip

carrera manifold
On the PET for the carrera intake manifold, it shows a insulator between 2 gaskets. Is this what I should order? or just use a gasket. thanks Philip

1/2 bay intercooler mod
Does anyone have a pics/post/source where I can get some ideas on how to modify my andial 1/2 bay to fit the Carrera manifold in the stock position pointing towards the firewall. It might even be a better solution to find another unit and sell the one I have. I would like to retain the A/C as previously mentioned, and don't think a full bay will permit this. A source for a fabricator to modify my unit would also be appreciated. I expect this to be the task which will drag my project along. thanks Philip

Some has rotated the throttle body by cutting it and then Welding it back on facing forward, like the 930 manifold does

shroud
Is there a difference between a 930 shroud and a carrera shroud? I did a test fit of my carrera intake manifold. I have no gaskets or spacers in place, but it appears that my 930 shroud will not fit. In the pics there is about 3/4" between the manifold and the heads. I think this will not pull together properly, as it will crush the shroud. Do I need to get a carrera shroud? Philip
