front mount oil cooler - necessary to mount in series or standalone?

I'm in process of fitting a dp style AIR valance, affording me the opportunity to delve into a front mount oil cooler.

I did some search surfing and see many seem to add this to their fender mount and run in series.

For aggressive street driving and an occasional DE, is this required? I've run DE's in June / Aug worstest blazingly scorching sun in SC & GA and oil temps got up there but nothing overly dramatic.

Just wondering if I can bin the fender unit and solely run the front mount, or does that not really accomplish anything? I'm having trouble seeing how it'd be possible though to not have a sole front mount run cooler than the sole fender mount (radiator in my '87).

I see many references to BAT (Motul), Setrab, and Elephant Racing, and to go -16 fittings. Any suggestions for my simple usage / requirement? Cross / diagonal flow vs. standard?

Any install tips / kit sourcing list 'o parts?

Anyone got anything to sell? 8-)

Thanks in advance gents!

In for a response as adding cooling capacity is on my to-do list as well.

Is there a good oil system diagram out there for the 930?

When I got my car it only had a front mounted oil cooler. It worked well as long as the car was moving but after a few minutes in traffic the temperature started to climb. However, as soon as the car started moving, the temps rapidly dropped back to normal. I was actually impressed how quickly the temperature was drop.

I've since added the carrera cooler in the fender and will probably add a fan but I need to do some more testing before I do

I talked to my engine builder and he recommended to put them in series. I also have the DP valance, and have just purchased a Setrab 72 row cooler. I plan on geting the hose, fittings and mountings from Elephant. They have a package to fit this cooler, as its the same cooler they sell. Send them an email to get a quote for the fittings and hoses for this install. I believe you can put it together from their partslist, and mount the fittings yourself, but the ready made hose and fitting package is the same price. However, I don't thing you'll find the hose package as a product line on their web. Chuck sent me a quote by email very quickly when I contacted him.

Hey Paulie ,I put mine in series and have never looked back.temps in summer here are brutal and I NEVER see temps above 190 after the t stat opens. If I lived in a colder climate I would probably install a ball valve to only run fender mount when it's real cold to ensure good temps. Got my setup, cooler lines etc from Patrick motor sports .do it!!!

thanks for the replies, guys

FRANK! (thought you might be shunning me fer not being able to man up to yer EFI bits, sent you a PM weekses ago and... radio silence) Good to hear from you, and that I may not be shunned afterall 8-).

Again, I saw / see how many out there / here choose to run them in series... my question is... if I SWAP OUT the fender until and SWAP IN the front mount, do you think I'd be better off than stock?

Obviously tandem is BETTER... but is it necessary for my described needs? Meaning, will it be a net wash (no gain)? Me, I can't see how it wouldn't be better?

Again again, this is for street usage in the Northeast, and maybe an annual DE when/where I'm able to finagle such.

What say yous?

I would say that a single front mount cooler will perform better than the single fender mount. Better airflow through the cooler. I can't understand why you would swap vs. run both. Both will be better...I think the cost of the plumbing to run just a front mount vs. both coolers is a wash, so the only possible benefit of running only a front mount is if you can sell your fender mount...how much $ is that going to be? Not enough to make it more valuable than having two coolers IMO. Keep a cooler in your fender, but see if you can swap your Carrera cooler for the 28 tube brass unit. IMO this one is better for the fender location because it's a heat sink, rather than radiator style unit that requires airflow. The airflow sucks in the fender unless you've got some serious ducting going on, or better yet, the headlight bucket removed.

I totally don't disagree but yeah... sadly you nailed it - I can get good crink for the OE unit which defrays a pretty large chunk of the front mount.

Reality... bites. But hey that's my world so I must find ways to be creative and make best with what I've got, as I've always done. Remember, not only am I not as talented as many here... I'm not nearly as Superheroic either, just John Q. Pubic.

I did just score the side-indicator scoop duct thingamajig (prior to the valance coming into the equation), so I will have airflow over whichever fender unit resides in there.

Mebbe I'll wait for now until I can source a good opportunity on something out there... no hurry at all, other than I was thinking of nailing it now before it all gets buttoned back up. No biggie I s'pose...
