failed smog @15mph for NO
 

Looking for suggestions on what to try to get the car to pass smog :(

Just had distributer reworked with new vacuum advance, lots of replaced vacuum line. Timing & fuel properly set all was done by local specialist. Car runs great feels strong as ever. I have a used cat/muffler on it I bought a few years ago. I also have a 2nd used cat I could swap on although I imagine separating the combo on it now will be a workout :) I didn't try any of those fuel additives (but have a bottle of G2P on hand..) and the car has about half a tank of fresh 91 in it.

If you press in, engage then turn the plunger counter clockwise on your air meter that will lean it up nicely, try a quarter turn. Picture of plunger location can be found on the

Looks like its leaning out too much..0 HC% and 0 CO% but high NOx. Cylinders are running to hot. You need to richen up the C0 %. Not sure of what vehicle you have either, so its difficult to recommend adjustments!

Definitely too lean. Skip the fuel additives. Did you get her warmed up good before the test? The cat works best hot. Also, did you set it all up for 26 degrees advance at 4000 with the hoses connected?

@Chris sorry about that. Its a 1987 turbo.

@Speedy Squirrel I drove it for 30 mins the oil temp gauge was just over half way. My local specialist set the timing exactly as you described. I also have a timing light so I could confirm but I trust him he reworked the whole distributer.

Is there any way to adjust the mixture slightly/safely without all the CIS gauges? I don't have any of that stuff just basic tools :(

Its a little difficult to do adjustments without having a CO meter to tell you where your at. I use a wideband O2 which is probably one of the best tuning tools out there! Turning the adjustment plunger clockwise will richen it up, but without knowing whats coming out the tailpipe, you may make things go the other way and totally flood the engine and create a worse scenario for yourself.
Your mechanic should be able to dial it in better for you but it may also be your lambda system causing it to lean out to much!
The wideband O2 tells me what going on at all times. I wouldn't run WOT without one!

Probably be money ahead to take it to a garage with a CO meter. Do you have the service manual?

So I tried to enrich it a little by making a very small turn of the mixture screw. I took it back and they said it was running way to rich, unfortunately I didn't bring the wrench with me and they weren't willing to lend me tools while it was on the rollers. Does anyone know of a place that rents CO meters? I guess I can take it back and ask my mechanic to set it up again but a little richer this time.

Will update you guys when I make some progress. Will keep an eye on the thread if anyone has other ideas.

If you are in CA a number of garages have them. Do you have the shop manual with the procedure?

I have a copy of the manual. I didn't reference it when I tried adjusting the mixture, I just read on here to try turning it very little clockwise. I should have been more careful I was just excited that it might be able to pass and I could finally move on to other projects on the car without the smog hanging over :(

anyone in or around Santa Clara / San Jose have a CO meter and has done this before want to meet up for a drink? :)

Don Wise's AutoWerks in Campbell are pretty solid. I think they have a CO meter.

I use to take my car to Jerry Woods in Campbell and have him smog the car. They would make the adjustments and take it to the smog station.

It passed after being adjusted properly :cool: My local specialist is really a boss, I'm lucky he puts up with me!

Right before the re test the CD box went out on me, it was literally on the dyno idling and just about to start the 15mph test again and it died. I went with ECUDoctors rebuilt unit which so far is working out great!
