Request for AFR Recommendations & Installations
I am about to purchase an AFR meter and would appreciate it very much if people could share their installations. I would prefer not to cut the console or modify the dash although I could replace the ash tray. Recommendations, warnings, and pictures of installations would be appreciated.
I was also wondering if anyone had experience with the AEM wifi unit? Amazon.com: AEM 30-2320 X-WiFi Wideband UEGO and EGT Wireless Gauge Controller: Automotive Thanks! Last edited by Tonger; 09-04-2014 at 09:30 AM.. |

Look at the AEM Failsafe unit. I like it because it has internal logging capability (no separate logging modules needed). You'll need a longer wire harness to go from the exhaust sensor to the dash. Bisimoto makes them.
Much easier to route with engine out. I bought a clock hole delete plug from our host and circle sawed a hole for the AEM gauge. Looks nice. Others have gutted non functional gauges and slipped AFR gauges inside for a more factory look. I was headed that way but am very happy with my install. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in. Good luck! |

I didn't want to cut into my dash either, the clock spot was already taken by a boost gauge and I'm not a fan of the ash tray idea so I went a different direction. Unlike the tach or boost gauge you don't need it right in front of your face (plus, being down in the console doesn't exactly give you the best view anyway) but you do want it fairly convenient.
With that in mind, plus it afforded quite simple installation, I went with the carpeted area of the passenger's kit panel. See the lower right part of the photo in post No. 30 of this thread ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/693527-gages-console-need-some-ideas-info.html

I forgot to mention that the AEM gauge has both an digital and adjustable colored LED readout around its perimeter. I have boost reading in the center digital readout and AFR in the LED. Once you get your AFRs in spec you can change the colors of the LEDs to alert you to AFR conditions outside of acceptable range that you designate. It's pretty neat. BTW- I have no affiliation with this manufacturer- just a satisfied customer.

I just installed the PLX AFR and highly recommend it. Mounting it was extremely easy without cutting up the dash, as its about a 1/2 inch thick. Here's why I love it:
1) It also tells you the battery voltage. Huge perk!!! With a press of a button it becomes a battery meter with graphing. Helps tremendously with racking down 911 battery/charging/electrical issues. 2) It plots out the AFR on the screen. So, you can glance down and see what the last 10 seconds were like. Extremely useful. 3) The unit simulates your o2 sensor output. What that means is you just need 1 o2 bung hole, and 1 o2 sensor. This feeds the unit, and then the unit feeds the cars CPU. Works great. Beats mounting another bung hole. 3) The best feature is easy mountability. Here is what I did. I ran the wires from the o2 sensor through the tunnel, and put the main unit under the seat. Then, I mounted the guage just to the right of the steering wheel. On your car there is a little vent hole there, its the size of a nickel. It is easly pulled out. I took this little vent plug out, and epoxied the guage to the back of it, with the wire running through the hole. Mounting the guage just requires pushing the guage with the plug on it, back into the hole. VIOLA!!! Works perfectly, no dash damage, easily reversible. And better yet, you can easily see it while driving. You can't do that with any other monitor. I haven't seen anyone else do this, not sure why. Its a fabulous way to mount it!!! PLX DM-6 SM-AFR | Wideband Air Fuel Gauge <$200 on the net if you search for it!!! Highly recomended. Bo |

Ditto but the Gen 3 version back in 2012.
I mount mine where the ashtray is but will take a look at Bo mounting.

I don't need a radio in my 930, so I made a block off plate and mounted the gauge with room to spare. Works for me, maybe not for you.

I have a Wego 4 I purchased from our host.
Daytona Sensors LLC - WEGO IV Wide-Band Air/Fuel Ratio Tuning Aid Install was easy. It's small, about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I Velcro'd it under my ash tray. You can barely see it unless you're looking for it. The display is pretty bright so it's easy to see. I added a GM map sensor for boost. It gives you instant readings and stores up to two hours of data. I really like the graphs in their application that I use to read the data. I will try to post some photos. |

I have an AEM unit that I am looking to sell. I bought it a year ago and used it for about 200 miles and then decided I wanted the PLX solution so I could show boost, fuel pressure and AFR on one display. As far as AFR solution goes, the AEM and PLX units work equally well, but the nod goes to the AEM unit for overall ease of use. The biggest difference is the AEM connects reliably and quickly to the phone readout. With the PLX solution displaying on an iPhone through the Kiwi Wifi and Dashcommand, it is sometimes finicky on the hook up (I solved this for my application by using a dedicated iPhone to display my 'gauges'.)
If you want it, I will sell you the 200 mile used AEM for $280 ($50 less than on Amazon now). Everything looks brand new except for the sensor which obviously has some carbon on it. Send me a PM if interested. |

Thanks for your responses - I especially appreciate the link to the gauge thread. I've already got the VDO boost gauge in the clock space. It doesn't sound like anyone has done the wifi thing so I'll probably pass on that.
1986 - The all in one thing about the WEGO sounds straightforward, can you turn it on an off? Are you EFI? I am running CIS. Thanks |

I like the wifi solution and show it through my iPhone. I have it mounted underneath my Valentine 1 using an iMagnet I got on Amazon for $30ish. Here is a picture of the mount:
![]() I am now using Dashcommand through the PLX wifi to show Boost gauge on left, Combo Fuel Pressure (needle) and AFR (digital in center) on right and a small volt meter on the bottom. Gauges can be repositioned to your liking. This same mount system would work for the AEM system.

Hey Frank, my suggestion is to buy speednme's Wego and get the sensor. I have the same one works great plus I can email you photo's on how I installed it on my car. One question is do you have a muffler with the bung for the 02 sensor? if not you will need it done.

I got an NGK and it sits on top of dash in front of steering wheel - but bear in mind mine is a track machine and I want to know what is going on most of the time, without having to look for it. You could use sticky sided Velcro to hold it in place.
Digital display in AFR numbers - about1/2" high. Alan

Thank you for your thoughts and input. I ultimately decided to go with the WEGO IV and the extension cable for simplicity's sake. I guess the next step is to figure out the best cable routing. Right now the motor is out and the console is coming out as well.
I really appreciate your help! |

Or just lengthen it yourself, as I did. Its not hard to splice 3(?IIRC) wires and add a little length. I did it for both of my widebands, right and left bank. I would also install them in the collectors, most accurate readings. As for mounting, I mounted mine to my rollcage so I assume that is out of the question for you.

I have an Innovate LC-1... and I am NOT impressed with it at all!! I can not stand the thing, or the arrogant company.
So, Is it the PLX that everyone seems to be happy with?? I have heard really good things about the NGK one, but I do not like the look of the display. I prefer a digital readout and a led light....

Plx
I was happy with the PLX (DM-200)! The modules I have mounted under the drivers seat.
