So what did you use inside the tank, and how did it come out?
Awesome work, BTW.

I have tried a number of different cleaning solutions. Industrial strength degreaser mixed with boiling water, TSP and boiling water. TSP-PF and boiling water, Cascade dish detergent and boiling water. I also bought 5 gallons of Evaporust and tumbled that for 24 hrs. The best cheapest solution so far was 2 cups Cascade, 1 cup TSP and 5 gal boiling water. The Cascade has sodium silicate in it as a corosion inhibitor and prevents flash rusting while tumbling. So after 5 days of cleaning the tank is looking good.

It's still going right now, but I hope tomorrow I can say it's finished.

I'd place some stainless steel nuts and bolts of different sizes inside there as well.

I thought of that as well but the sump is plastic, and likely brittle. Other people working on these tanks have broken the sump with finger pressure.

Engine top end refresh
So I finally tore into the engine. All 24 head studs were intact, and I got them all out without breaking anything. Now just waiting on some parts before sending the heads off. Anyone have a set of valve springs available? Eibach 20701.212 EVS valve spring set.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() No broken rings and pistons seem to be in good shape. Shown is a before and after shot of the cylinders. Its amazing how nice glass bead blasting makes aluminum look. Last edited by reclino; 01-17-2017 at 02:54 PM.. |

Cylinders looked crusty on the outside but nice inside. Need to measure for roundness and taper.
I had some help from my son removing the head studs. ![]()

All 6 heads cleaned up well enough to send out. Exhaust valve guides are quite worn, intake guides have some wear, will be replacing them all with Colsibro (copper nickel silicon) guides from Chris Seven.

Fun task for tonight is gluing the corners of the intercooler gasket back together. Not as easy as I thought it would be. Intercooler is clean now, and has a fresh thin coat of VHT brake caliper paint. Baked on.

It was looking pretty ugly when I got the car, spent most of Sunday cleaning it, in parts washer first, then in the bathtub. About an hour with a piece of welding wire picking clearing many fins jammed up with pine needles and seeds.

Valve springs arrived the other day. For some reason Eibach has stopped making these springs? Lucky for me aPelican who is an employee at Eibach was able to dig up qty 13 springs for me. Got a spare for no good reason.

The pistons cleaned up very well. I soaked them in aircraft paint stripper and all the carbon wiped right off with very little scrubbing. Have Total Seal piston rings to go back in.
