Porsche 930 vs BMW M5 E60
Has anyone considered switching to car car like the E60 BMW M5 with the V10 ? Maybe not quite as "go-cart like" but crazy power none the less and added practicality.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGGPXGt7FWY Went for a spin today in a nice M5. Enjoy !

To augment the stable as a DD, sure. Replace? Never.

I kept my 930s with a W211 E55. One fast coupe and one fast night out car.

Same I also own a W211 E55, that I have owned for almost 6 years, fun, fast and ownership has been painless.

I had a 2010 black/red M5 as my daily for 4 years. It was an excellent car. Traded it for a new 991 C2S as my daily. Obviously two totally different cars. The 991 was easy to drive (too easy) - made it impossible not to throw the car around. The M5 was really quick for a 2 ton-plus, 4-door sedan. Very comfortable and alot easier to put gold clubs in.
Both are gone now - my daily is a 2008 Aston Martin Vantage with a 6-speed manual. I have to say - I am really enjoying the Aston.

I've driven a bunch, both DSC & 6spd.
Awesome cars, once you get over the Bangle styling. The V10 shrill is *quite intoxicating*. They are violently fast, and very much a hoon-mobile... can pitch them into a wildly controllable perpetual drift into oblivion if desired. I'd want an extended warranty... do some forum / google research on repairs... there are a number of known HUGELY A$$PENSIVE issues (rear diff's, fuel pumps, engine issues, etc.). Not at all a replacement for a 930 (says the guy who sold his 930 to buy a biturbo12 Benz? lol / d'oh... sold that to buy the 930 BACK... if that helps your decision heh heh?)... |

I had an E39 M5 as a DD for 12 years. Heavy but gobs of torque and a smooth, fast-shifting 6 speed box. I rarely used first gear in it.

I DD an E63 M6 and agree with the other posters, completely different experience. In my DD I need good Bluetooth for phone calls, comfort, good AC, and decent trunk space. The M6 does all of this and has ballistic power when you want it. I can't imagine daily driving any model 930, but for a weekend blast it's a far more rewarding and challenging drive.
I've also had no issues in 4.5 years of M6 ownership. I believe they're generally reliable cars. Cheers

I love my 930, modded, fast, furious, and cool presence.
M5 crazy fast with chip will do OVER 200 mph at racetrack Still a tough decision. Love both cars. Porsche has been more reliable.

Two totally different cars that meet both their design goals well.
I would not replace a 930 with a M5 or try and replace an M5 with a 930. |

Friend at work had the E60 M5.
He gets sort of wistful and teary when the subject comes up. Says the first years of ownership were the best of any car he's had. When the warranty ran out it became silly expensive. Several 5 digit repairs in that first year out of warranty, random stuff and felt like no end in sight. |

Love those cars, especially the sound, always thought I would add one to the stable.
But........you need to do a search on 'S85 rod bearings'

I was at my friends shop checking up on my 930 when he asked me if I wanted an E60 M5...cheap. I asked what was the catch. He said a customer bought it at an auction and it was running crappy. Diagnosis was a blown motor. $11k for a used one. Customer is sending the car back to the auction.

I would add the e60 v10 to my garage as a DD, get one in anthracite to park next to my '79 930.
The M5/ M6 are a bargain now, compared to new . Throw a pair of our MSDS tuned exhaust headers in the mix...and hit hyperspeeds in a blink. Not to mention the F1 symphony ! Marty
