3LDZ turbo technical question
Do not respond if you feel the need to inform me that I should just send this turbo out for rebuild..
I am taking the turbo apart and it seems like the journal bearing is stuck to the turbine shaft. I assumed that this would be a slip fit as on other turbos I have worked on. The vent line from the turbo oil sump was cracked, so there could be corrosion holding the bearing on the shaft. I have cleaned it with Ultrasonic and now it is soaking in Evapo-Rust. So is the bearing a press fit or slip fit on the shaft? Thanks David |

Definitely a slip fit. The shaft and bearing are carboned up. get it apart and polish the shaft and see how it looks.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. I got a lot of carbon off with the ultrasonic cleaner, that picture is before cleaning. I will let it soak in the Evapo-Rust for a few days and then see how it feels.

Try some carb cleaner, that will work better for carbon.

maybe a little heat also. put the part in an oven and use some penetrating oil on it.

Already did carb cleaner, WD40 and PB Blaster. I am trying least aggressive methods first. Like I said before, at this point I suspect a tiny bit of corrosion between the bearing and the turbo shaft, if this is the case, time and the 5 gal bucket of Evapo-Rust will get rid of the corrosion.

Think it ran dry and friction welded to the shaft?

Put it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes and it came right off. The shaft looks fine, must have been some old oil holding it on.

Give the shaft a few taps with the soft blow hammer. It works.
