Even the radios in these cars are getting silly.
For whatever reason, my 86 has an 87-89 radio in it, a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46.
It works fine and I always thought it was the stock radio, but it's not. I could care less either way, honestly, as my car is drifting further from stock every year as fast as the War Department and disposable budget permits. Anyway, I just looked up the OEM-91164516001 part number on Pelican Parts box and the radio is $1,300! Even on ebay, one guy is asking $800 and another wants $550. Any of you going-back-to-stock guys want to trade some go-fast bits for this thing?

My ride is far from stock as well. That said I have mothballed all the stock parts I've replaced. Allot of the original parts were missing when I bought the car (radio included) I've been collecting them while they're still available just incase I ever decide to sell.
For the life of me though I can't understand why anyone would give two shats about an original cassette deck. It's one off the last parts on my list so I guess I'll be in the market ![]() It's a Euro so at least I don't have to worry about sourcing any emissions crap.

I bought a stock CR Blaupunkt for my '79. It is staying in a box. The Pioneer Premier with Bluetooth, hands free calling and all that other good stuff is too good to not use.

Some of us need to keep track of our hos at all times, dude - pimpin' ain't easy! Not to mention, try driving your Turbo more than 1500 miles a year and you won't be as concerned with missing out on a few moments of engine and exhaust noise.

I'm currently trying to source a Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 for my 88 ROW car.
A guy on ebay in the UK has one for £400 and won't take offers. I can't bring myself to pay that much for something that is very low tech compared to the remote control CD that's in it now. Having said that, I've only ever switched the current one on once when I bought the car 10 years ago to make sure it worked.....I much prefer the flat six soundtrack!!

I've modded the fookin beejeebus out of my POS and sold off ALL the parts...
...but... ...my Blaupunkt SQR-46 is *the only thing* that I will not fukk with. NOTHING ruins the interior of these cars (any car, I'll vehemently argue) than the unsightly sight of an aftermarket headunit. Unless you're Rey and it's Mac 8-)... but srsly... even then - for me - it's just not worth the compromise. NOTHING sounds as good as focusing on the sweetsweet cacophony these friggin things emit to the world. While I do ensure I DO have "tunes"... the 930 is not a place I need rockstar sound system staging. Nor any phone interfaces - especially no phone interfaces. Take / make a call while driving a 930? No thanks - prefer my focus and bemusement remain unfettered! I am seriously contemplating though Brendon's suggestion... leave OE headunit and place amp & USB interface under seat and tie into speakers... best of both worlds IMO. Just need to figure out how to get there 8-/. I have no issue w/ broadcast radio, except the antenna power in my car sucks HUGE HAIRY NADS... as does the local programming (I'm being brainwashed - short effort, I know - but other locale's have MUCH better programming... gdammit!!!) anywho... Kenster! How's your dashfrankenstein'ing going? Hopefully swimmingly successful!?!?? Missed you @ Jake's this year, def bummer! |

Paul, you make a good point. I have given no thought to what I might put in there in its stead.
It does have some obvious appeal, as I have received three PMs on it. Sorry I haven't responded to any of them. I would need to do a serious amplifier and speaker upgrade to overcome the wind and exhaust noise before an AUX input from my phone made any sense. But that does sound interesting. One of those XM receivers could also be considered, and I do have two other cars that I could bounce that thing around to. Oh and we no longer "name" the job to which you referred to. That ****** situation couldn't have hit at a worse time of the year (or my life). The car sits.

Damn Ken, I am real sorry to hear about the timing - not that anytime for 'that' could possibly ever be good but I certainly know what you mean.
I figured you'd garner a bunch of interest in it. Maybe a blank off plate and hidden usb access? Dunno. Again, good luck with it eventually - and better luck with everything else, doesn't sound fun and btdt 8-/ |

That sucks. Wish the previous owner didn't rip out the radio and speakers on my car. Guess I'll probably pass on putting that stuff back in for now..
On the other hand it is lighter!! haha ![]()

Just a thought: Is it possible that your car is a very late production car and was fitted with the SQR46 Reno at the factory? Maybe they ran out of SQR23 Montereys toward the end of production and went with the 87 model radio for those cars. My 87 has an aftermarket Clarion but the original Reno came with the car. I'd like to change it back to the Reno but I'm not sure if there's a code or password type lock on it or if the original harness has been butchered. I only want to put it back in for the originality, I very rarely turn the radio on (maybe on the rare interstate run). I believe the Reno is an improvement over the Monterey because it doesn't have that funky station changer sticking out.
