1978/79 Turbo RS

We know it never existed, but..

Knowing other Porsche RS's we could go into "what if" mode and speculate what car would it be.

Actually there have been plans to built them lightweight 100% performance orientated road turbos at the factory but they were overridden (by Herr Fuhrmann I believe) and no, let's make it a luxury autobahn runner instead.

So let's the imagination do its thing. I am curious how close my modified '78 is to the ideal RS which never happened.

I have one of those. There are lots of them actually.
Glass bumpers, no power anything, no ac, lightweight body from a 911 same as the early 75-77 cars.
2500# and lots of turbo power. Good combo.

I've got my '84 street 930 down to 2700lbs. with half a tank of gas, as measured over my nearest state hwy. weight scales...does that rate merit?

I am just starting the tear down of my '78 930 clone project.

guy who had it built got a '78 3.3 turbo motor and rebuilt from the crank up, twin plug, etc. still CIS and was told it dyno'ed at over 400hp.

full metal wide body slant nose, but left the SC NA brakes and suspension.

researching options for the full suspension upgrades. decided to go with 930 brakes and already got a set of calipers.

934 tribute? now a 930 turbo RS? the options are endless at this point, right up to the time I start buying parts. LOL

I think my old Red Rocket played tribute to that theme. Tub was a stripper SC, no sunroof, no power windows or door locks, A/C delete. All that was factory. There wasn't even any plumbing or vents for A/C. We added 930 fenders, fiberglass bumpers and a modded 3.3L turbo engine. It weighed 2700# half full of gas with me in it. Great fun to drive!

How about this logic?

NA Carrera => Carrera RS ==> GT3
930 => 935 ==> GT2

IMO the RS nomenclature should stick with the naturally aspirated Cars... The 930 received its early lightweight variant as the 935...

The Turbo's variant

+1
The Factory 935's had 930 serial numbers.

It looks like serendipity struck in the naming of the Red Rocket in lieu of the recent announcement that all future 911's will be turbocharged. Not RS but rather 911GTS.

My 965 tribute started life as a nice lightweight 1975 Carrera non sunroof car. Its 2421lbs with almost a full tank of gas. Torsion bars up front, bilstein coilovers in rear. Handles amazing. I just had an amazing weekend at the track, I've been dreaming of more power but even with the 350ish HP I have the car is tons of fun at Mosport good for almost 215kph / 133 mph in 4th on back straight. I'd love to get onto a track long enought to wind out 5th gear! I think i'll just get it running better by possibly removing CIS for Fuel Injection. Then leave as is for a white.

This 79 should be close to your "what if".Here is a 79 930 that was built decades ago with later RS parts, Mode ( Holcombe ) suspension and hot rod motor.

Full tank of gas, no wheels but on camber/toe plates.

So with wheels and 1/2 tank, I am guessing 2550.

Fully caged, light interior and 400/400 to the rear wheels... fun to drive!!

This is as close to a 930 Lightweight thread as I could find to start posting on, so here goes:

My current weight is 2533 with about 1/2 a tank and the spare tire in the frunk.

Lightweight mods:
A/C removed (except for front blower ducted to the three dash vents)
Fiberglass bumpers with all bumper shocks removed
Recaro PP seats
Heater automatic controls removed (now single heater lever between seats)
Rear seats removed
Sound deadening removed
RS carpet kit with lightweight foam on rear panel
RS door panels
Various wiring removed related to A/C and heater
Electric radio antenna removed
Windshield washer system removed
Lightweight starter
Lightweight clutch & flywheel
A bunch of stuff related to EFI system including original engine wiring harness

Future mods:
Replace current full bay 30lb intercooler with lighter low profile cooler
Replace whaletail with fiberglass ducktail
Remove sunroof
Replace tail lights with 3D printed housings and LED lights
Replace rear wiring harness with minimal harness
Replace 965 fiberglass bumpers with something more '79 period correct

I'm looking for other ideas.

I'm at 2698 lb without driver (140 lbs). Could drop another 80+ lbs if I dumped the Recaro Electric C seats. Still has the full interior with lightweight RS carpet kit.

Converted to front & rear coilovers a few months back, along with Ohlins front adjustable inserts, Wevo/Ohlin adjustables in the rear. Evergreen Turbo Raptor upgrade to the K27-2700. Not sure if that adds any power, does spool up quicker.
