Question Do you know this 965/964 Engine, Yellow fan & valve covers pic's

Hey guys,

As some of you know, I just traded my brother my 97 993 cab 6 speed, for his 92 964 turbo with 49k miles with 3.6 NA engine, Then I was lucky to find its engine in LA California, I have some pic's to look at, It looks like there is some Mods , I would like to know if someone has info on this Engine ? Does any Know this engine or seen it on a forum ?

Lets play a game..... Name the Modifications

The engine is at the shop getting ready to be rebuilt, Should I keep the mods or go back to stock?

Here's the pic;s

Ports look larger than stock. Hard to tell from the angle but intake port looks short like maybe 3.2 Carrera heads?

It is very hard to tell anything from those pictures. I am seeing a Tial WG and possibly a second set of plug wires, has it been twin plugged? Can't tell if the exhaust is stock or not looks like old GHL design which had issues with the smaller dia pipe. What are you seeing?

I guess the question is how far do you plan to take this? There is a unique feel to a CIS car when it is running properly. By the looks of it this will need a lot of sorting. Are you happy with how the power is delivered with the N/A engine. You can do some minor upgrades and get close to 250 Hp to the wheels but not as much torque out of a N/A 3.6 without any of the quirkiness of the CIS.

Is it worth going back to stock if it isn't going to improve the value of the car? I enjoy my turbo but in all honesty a low boost turbo setup on an N/A engine will outperform and be much more linear in power delivery )0 lag and for far less than what you will spend on this?

Just a thought.

Stock is for chumps, choads, and chowderheads, and considering that you are none of those, the mod-v-stock questions is moot!!!

I read 3.6 and assumed this was also which would have finned cylinders.

I am assuming you might check your cams while you're at it. CIS is a beautiful thing until it starts acting up. Good Luck

BTW I don't see an intercooler. Do you have the factory unit or are you still missing it. IIRC there was one for sale in the for sale section last week or the other day. Also do you have the EZ-69 module for the 91-92 rev 01. THese run around 3 grand rebuilt from Porsche and IIRC a $900 core charge. The occasionally come up for sale but not too often.

This engine is complete with 964 turbo intercooler and EZ69 system, after the they do a complete teardown and invintory, then I'll find out what Cams and Rods and valve springs was being used and what I'll decide to keep,

Good. I have seen people buy turbo engines for $25k only to find out these parts weren't included.

I saw it in person about a month ago. I think the harness was burned...something was wrong with it when I saw it and passed because it wasn't what I was looking for.

I will be there tomorrow or Friday on some other business and can put eyes on it for you.

As Cobalt stated.. very hard to see/tell with those photos.. I did catch the fully finned cylinders.. Tial waste-gate peeking out and headers of some sort.. that's about it however.

And of course the shop you bought it from should know something about it I would think since in another thread you stated they were the guys who removed it.. right? Of course the tear-down will tell all.

Lastly, dude.. you've got waaaaay to many threads about the same adventure... can you continue the details of the build/ride in just this one? Just say'n..

Have fun!

No sir.

I looked at that motor about a month ago because I was looking for a core. Unfortunately it had too many modifications for what we were trying to buy, and there was some fire damage to the wiring harness that I didn't want to deal with.

From purely a "core" perspective it appeared to have good parts and would make a nice jumping off point for someone, just not us at the time.
