930 Trans questions
 
Newly acquired pops out of second and reverse.... Lots of slop in shift rod at Trans rear, like 5/16" to 3/8".... What is normal end play with detent installed??? Awesome site, my first post!! Bryan

And.... Solids and shavings in the gear oil and magnetic plug.....

Is this your first air cooled 911?

The pre 89 930s and pre 87 911s will never shift like a Honda. The transmissions are slow shifting (say 'one-one thousand' as you shift gears).

As for the popping out, it sounds like someone didn't understand this and got rammy with it. Probably a bent shift fork or damaged synchros. What year is your car? What gear is popping out?

Itsa sandrail, sbc to a 930...... When first received it pops out of 2nd on decel, pops out of reverse if others firmly. Haven't tested under full power. Forks and synchros is what I thought too.

Very fine magnetic fuzz on the drain plug is normal, but solids/shavings are not . . . would be interesting to see a pic.

Well thanks Rawkknees! I'll take a photo after work today. It's definitely fuzz,,, I may be exaggerating the shavings. So... Back to the shaft with detent, is 3/8" excessive play? BRyan

Sure they do. They are spring loaded and put in through the side of the gearbox so that they get locked into the cut outs in the shift rods when you select a gear. Good pictures in this guy's rebuild blog:

3/8" play in a detent? That's a shift rod with a huge chunk missing out of it. Though I'm not sure that it the problem here. The rods don't really wear like that and it's more likely a shift fork has moved off its locked position or something is amiss with the selector rod (the one that sticks out the back of the gearbox and chooses all the other shift rods) since it also appears to impact reverse.

Have you pulled the inspection plate to look at the guide fork that directs the selectro rods? The tines on that sometimes break and sometimes they come unscrewed from the plate itself.

since it's not in a stock car the play might be the connector between the shifter and the rod. The cars have a plastic bushing that goes bad and makes it sloppy. if your sand rail has a stock shifter the slop might be from the coupling. the bushings in the shifter also can go bad.

If the bushings are ok, alignment is I would check for shavings. Keep in mind that is not always an indicator of whats going on in there. Some other things that come to mind on past issues and builds like this is a bent shift fork that was mentioned before. It is possible it was speed shifted or rammed into gear and pushed it out of alignment. The more likely scenario is the opp sleeve and guide is damaged not allowing the gear to stay locked under TQ. I would certainly go through the basics before I pulled the tranny apart but if it turns out to be the opp sleeve it is a pretty easy fix.

Oh for the record there is detents in the the trans but they are not adjustable and simply put pressure on the rods to maintain proper alignment.

Wow, someone reads that stuff still! I actually did a full on teardown and build at Tech Tactics one year and Parade at another. Talk about nerve racking to build one in 45 minutes with 15 minutes left for questions.

Someone must. I did a GIS for 930 detent and your picture was one of the top results. I clicked the link, read through your article, and thought it worth linking the whole thing versus just the picture.
