Preparing for EFI upgrade

Hey fellas, i'm planning an EFI upgrade maybe this winter, Chris from Turbocraft has sent me a nice complete list of what i'll need and i'm going to try and do this as cost effective as possible using parts from Chris and others i'll source on my own. Hoping to sell off all my CIS stuff & euro fuel distributor to offset some of the cost.

I'm wondering if my stock intake port size should be opened up for better gains. Is the effort worth the gains, I assume it means pulling my heads for the machining. The slippery slope...

Also I have an old Electromotive Tec1 twin plug ECU, I should be able to re-use the existing crank trigger set up depending which new ECU I go with, whether its a VEMS, Megasquirt or an AEM etc?

Sorry if I cause a ****storm, but VEMS stole MegaSquirt's designs. I'll leave it that, it's documented online.

MegaSquirt and AEM have a good following. You have Chris to fall back on with AEM, and a very active Facebook page for MegaSquirt. I've been super impressed with the FB page. You get dozens of responses in minutes from hardcore DIY guys, EE's, installer/tuners, and pro team tuners.

Can't go wrong with either of those two.

Wut is that facebook you talk about. If I have managed this far without it it would be bad karma to join now : )

Chris, 'dos' who was/is selling his ms efi stuff now had a link for all he needed for his efi project. He has stock port size setup for sale so that might suit you?

Better low end flow velocity with smaller ports means better low end torque. I think it will be nice with 964 cams and your 8.5 cr.

You can massage the intake ports while engine in but its a lot of work. I would just buy the kit and deside after words if you need more flow up.

ChrisTK and Brian may have real experience on that setup so hopefully they will chime in.

Stock ports does leave some on the table for sure. That said, didnt turbokraft just make 480whp on stock ports with bigger cams?

The Electromotive VR crank trigger will work fine with MS, which is what I am using. I had their dual plug crank fire setup prior to converting to EFI.

I sold a 930 intake to these guys, they mentioned they are creating a conversion kit for 930s based on the stock intake and throttle body.

Thanks guys!

DOS531, I noticed some kinks in the braided fuel lines, does that affect performance? I'm going to do some reading about that Megasquirt unit you have.

Nah its not actually kinked, no issues there. The lines are all e85 rated as well.

OK, thanks Dos531, is the MS2 good enough for running my simple EFI set up? I understand there is limits to the amount of outputs you can use? I'm not sure what output i'll need other than boost control & knock control.

MS2 is more than enough for your needs. It can be upgraded to ms3 later on if you feel you need it.

Stock ports does leave a lot on the table.

Stock heads and cams, expect around 425whp.
SC/964 cams, about 450-470whp.
More than that, plan on head work.

In our experience, this notion of "small ports is better velocity and more low rpm torque" is not applicable when running programmable engine management. You can put stock 3.2L Carrera heads on the same 3.3L, big 41.5mm ports, and the engine gains torque everywhere.

Having used ms2 for years I can definitely say ms3 is far better. I would personally start with the better system just my 2 cents
