1976 930 turbo K27 problem

Im restoring 76 930turbo and i found out today that my original k27 turbo can not be rebuild.
Probably I'll have to buy new one, should I go with a same one or to get something else?

Were there not some Euro models that had a K27 as original?

I just removed a K27 from my car that has a 930 part number and the outlet of side of the turbine side is the same as the 3LDZ that US cars had and fits the stock intercooler without any adapters etc.

Its for sale too :-)

My car is euro model

Do you have K27 or 3LDZ?

Post up a picture of the turbo.. that will help! 3ldz can be rebuilt. I just had my k27 rebuilt by Charlie @Evergreen turbo out of florida. He did an incredible job on it and I highly recommend him. Talking on the phone he says he's able to rebuild the 3ldz as well as I was curious about my old turbo and some of the rumors of it being a pain or difficult to rebuild.

Your car came with a 3LDZ. The K27-7200 is, I believe, the current production replacement for the 3LDZ, which is no longer manufactured. The K27 is better, but it's not a perfect fit. You'll have to modify the sheet metal housing over the turbo, and the inlet pipe will not exactly line up, but it's pretty close. Rebuilding your 3LDZ is the simplest solution.

The K27-7200 11/11 was the OEM turbo for the 964T. The 3.0L 930 had no options, only the 3LDZ as standard. Further, the '75-'77 3LDZ does not have the outlet boss with O-ring configuration found in the 3.3L intercooled 930s making the K27 an easier retrofit than in the later models.
If performance is the goal then the 3LDZ goes on the shelf. They are not hard to rebuild but there is a rash of Asian bull**** parts on the market that immediately fail so make sure you find a KKK/BW specialist that uses genuine German parts.

I have removed a K27 that has a normal Porsche outlet side and installed a K27 with the more typical shortie side that would need an adapter for a stock intercooler but fits a long neck just fine.

Here's a pic of the data plate. Its a bit dirty, cam oil line leaking all over it pretty bad. I can clean it up and take some pics. Its got about 20k miles on it and is not leaking/smoking, worked perfectly when removed.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1483541582.JPG

Not sure if Brian (RarlyL8) still offers this, but I had him rebuild and "modify" a 3LDZ a few years ago. No install issues and still going strong

Unfortunately not, the bad Asian knock-off parts killed that mod. They were mixed in with KKK/BW parts causing chaos. They got it sorted out but too late.

Durabilt Turbo will fix it quickly. They are where the Porsche IMSA race teams go.
They install a 360 degree thrust bearing upgrade and will make parts if they are no longer available new from 3K Borg Warner.

I've got a rebuilt 3LDZ and a new K27-7200 on the shelf, shoot me an email if interested. Make sure you get your turbo back, if it is the 3LDZ you want that original part as it has the date stamped on the housing.

So your suggestion is K27?

Whats the diff between a new K27-7200 and a K27/29 hybrid?

Thanks

RarlyL8 01-05-2017 10:37 AM

K27/K29 hybrid starts out as a new K27-7200. The 7200 frame is retained, a K29 hot side is bolted on and modified turbine wheel installed. Some machine work required. Result is a faster spooling K29. Fairly expensive but has a niche with Porshe purists and those who want a close to bolt on solution for the 930. Very robust turbo.
