Turning this 930 track monster back to a street car "project"

Just received this from my buddy. To say he has all the toys is a understatement. This was his first sort of track car. He has since started paying around with a Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo or something like that. He recently sold his CGT and purchased a 918 Spyder. Hes had a new Turbo for as long as I can remember and is a die hard petrol head. Anyway, he handed this car to me and wants to return it to a street car. You may recognize this car, it was featured on the web for sale a while back when he purchased it. I can tel you its well sorted and pulls like a freight train. The blow off sound is addictive. I personally want him to just add turn signals and the bare minimum and drive the heck out of it.

I need help with the shifter. It currently has a Hargett that's very sloppy and even pops out of the cup/holder under the stick. I have had Wevo in al my cars but after him being used to the "high rise" style, Id like to stay with that style for him. Any suggestions would be great.

Also, the car has lexan windows. I assume he will need a glass windshield to be legal? We need to install turn signals in front and the slant nose pop up lights have been welded shut. So a few things to address. FUN FUN!

Any help or thoughts would be great.

This is the info from LBI when they sold it. He has a list of the exact mods. I can tell you the car is a ballistic missile!

The 1986 Porsche 930 on offer is the product of the perfect combination of performance engineering and the vision of its owner. Sold new in 1986 as a standard 930 Coupe with a few options, it found its first owner. Only a few years later it was delivered to Blackburn and Daly for a full slant nose conversion, completed with all factory steel parts. Unfortunately early history is not known, but we do know that in December of 2001 it was on offer from the owner of 3 years located in Maryland. At the time of purchase by its current enthusiast owner/builder, it was described as a well serviced example with a few “S” interior updates, having set of 17″ RUF Wheels, and showed 53K original miles. The new owner took possession, turned the key and had a fantastic 930 with a few tasteful mods, and a great driver’s car.
This was only the beginning of what was to become an 11 year love-affair and constant endeavor to develop the ultimate track going 930. The vendor, a long time PCA member, Porsche Driving instructor, and seasoned racer with much track experience; new precisely what was needed to turn this into an example that could go around such tracks as Pocono North, Watkins Glen, Summit Point, and NJ Motor Sports Park in a competitive fashion. All while still able to keep a low cost season but leave such competitors as GT3 Cup Cars, C5R’s, and the rest of the field in the rear view mirror. This example was truly built with every aspect in mind, and incorporates nearly 10 years of sorting & critiquing to produce the turn key track day machine it is today.
The build specifications on this car are indeed lengthy, but more importantly were done in stages and well documented. This 930 was professionally altered only after extensive testing, trial, error, in the pursuit of obtaining the perfect lap time at whichever track its Michelin Slicks decided to grace. Accurate calculations, exotic materials, state of the art techniques and products by well known specialists all contribute to the final product as offered today.
The minutest of items such as nuts and bolts have all been replaced with titanium, while plenty of one-off items have been fabricated such as the cold air intakes for brake cooling. Larger and more important items were created to specific requirements, such as the Turbo; which was created by Turbonetics as a custom built hybrid K27 Unit. The transmission is totally rebuilt utilizing a Quaife differential and closer ratio 3rd and 4th gears. Power from the engine is by way of a 4-puck by Sachs, all fed by a very well built and last generation 91 3.3L 964 Turbo Block; totally rebuilt utilizing a lengthy list of important performance parts, many of which were custom for this build. The exterior received a plethora of attention as well, including a 935 Endurance nose, a D2 Turbo rear bumper, an adjustable carbon fiber rear spoiler as well as fiberglass trunk and hood lids. The interior is comprised of up to date and SCCA/FIA legal components. The Kirky aluminum seat is mounted directly to the K-FAB integrated NASCAR style Roll Cage all with SFI Padding. The driver can feel the track through the 12″ Momo suede wheel mounted via a Snap Off quick release. The suspension and braking are the ultimate combination of 993 TT Big Reds to keep the cost of use down while still effectively out braking the competition; and TRG Bilstein RSR Coil Over Shocks, all fully adjustable and connected via bronze bushings and JYBS Control Arms.
The list is long, very long, and as such we ask those in serious consideration of this opportunity to contact us for the exact list of modifications and parts used in the build. We are happy to report however that today the car is in excellent track worthy condition, in need of nothing to be enjoyed immediately. Cosmetically the car is totally in order and has never seen any accidents or dramatic events to warrant any body work. It retains all of its stock metal, very straight with good gaps and spot welds present throughout. The paint shows that of a car that has been driven and enjoyed on various east coast tracks, imperfect but appropriate for the application and in no need of attention. The car overall, in every crevasse inside and out, is extraordinarily clean and orderly.
There are many ways to go about describing this 930, but to capture the entire scope of this car as a track car and the build itself is very difficult on paper. Cars such as this are all about specifications, lists of what has been done and how. Its success can be defined by its lap times and the thrill it delivers to those brave enough to take on a 930 in a performance environment, let alone a track going version. Lap times at such tracks as Watkins Glen (1:58) and Summit Point (1:17) tell any knowledgeable onlooker what they need to know: this 930 is capable, correctly engineered, and that it is really down to the talent behind the wheel to put all of the extensive work to use.
In conclusion and comparatively speaking, if one was seeking all of the excitement and ability that an ex-factory backed racer can provide, this is as close as one can come without the $500,000 price tag; a true marvel of engineering and the vision of its owner. The cost to reproduce what is being offered would well exceed $100,000, not to mention hours of testing, trial, and error. This is indeed the ultimate opportunity for any serious enthusiast looking to hone their skills, test their abilities and have a blast while doing so. This 1986 Porsche 930 is an opportunity not to be missed.

Pretty mean looking little beasty. How do you think the 4 puck clutch is going to be for street driving

It is tricky in bumper to bumper and leaving neutral to first. Im thinking it will be used in light traffic situations, early cars & coffee type events. He has to many other toys for this to be driven that much. I could be wrong.

I love the rawness of it, as is. If it was mine and its not, I would leave it alone, even the single seat. Its running slicks now as well. Hes thinking plush carpet kit, leather Recaro pole position carbon seats, leather trim dash, leather RS door cards, headliner (if possible w/cage). Glass windshield and door glass. I love the lexan. Then there is the lights. No headlights at all, slant pop ups tab welded shut. All wiring gone. Thats going to be fun.

PS she shoots about 3 foot flames out the single exhaust pipe tip

I don't believe there is any necessity to change out Lexan for street legality. Headlights and blinkers are your only must on a car of this age if you're not in Cali.

I looked at this many years ago in GA and I think the requirement was for at least the front windshield to be an approved glass. Unsure about the others

Makes sense that safety glass would be required for the windshield.
Does the state patrol perform the physical check ?

You can put a headliner in with a cage. My track beast has one.
ALL the glass has to come out. So, while you do the windscreen...........

Some parts starting to trickle in. He wants the car 100% blacked out. We have AppBiz RS plush carpet kit, 2 Recaro Pole Position Classic seats in leather w/tartan inserts, Simpson cam lock 5 point harness pair, Rennline pedals, foot rests, door sills, rear shift linkage cover all in anodized perforated in black, and a carbon Momo Prototipo w/Porsche crest horn button. Also ApBiz leather RS door cards w/black leather pull straps and wrap the upper dash in leather. Inside of the car should smell like a leather glove. If we can get a headliner in it, going to do that as well.

WITH ALL THIS BEING SAID, I STILL PREFER HER AS IS!

Wanting to do a CAE Ultra shifter as well but they (CAE) show the 930 4 speed as "coming soon". When I email them (in Germany) they say next week, so will see. How lucky would that be. I have a buddy that has them in all his air cooled modified cars and he swears by them. They look insane in the car, if your not a purist, LOL.

Work has started. Had to remove the front bumper to get it on the trailer. Front slant nose fenders had so many layers of paint/bondo on them we sent them out to be blasted. You can see in the lower picture the side impact bars for the cage have been removed per owners request as they went into the hollow doors and were a pain to to climb over. We have acquired a clean used pair of complete doors, glass and frames. Will be using leather RS door cards.

Good look at the big reds and coil overs here, also has smart racing sways.

Side parts of cage in the door already removed

Rear quarter has seen some "track" incidents and has been repaired before (not at a high level). So we will need to fix and do it right. no biggie. Passengers side is clean.

Few more random goodies showing up.....

Black hood badge

AppBiz leather pull straps for the leather RS door cards

Rennline billet window wind ups (yep we went with wind ups so we didn't have to deal with wiring power windows). All other windows are lexan besides the new windshield. The car has had all its unnecessary wiring removed when converted to a race car, so were trying to keep it simple.

Rennline pedals, foot rests,"Turbo" script door sills, rear shift linkage cover all in perforated black. Will look slick with the RS black plush carpet kit.

Simpson 3" 5 pt. cam lock harness set

The factory slant fenders had so much mud on them. We had to have them blasted down. Look at the amount of bondo they had on them, the rest of the car is good. Never know what's underneath! Also can see a mod or repair they did inside the drivers side fender light "box". We are going to delete the gas flap and the antenna hole. Also considering shaving the rain gutters on the roof.
