‘76 930 wastegate adjusted all the way out...why and what to do.
I’m helping a friend who inherited a long stored, very original ‘76 930. After going through the entire fuel system, I noticed the wastegate was adjusted all the way out. Why would someone adjust it this way? What should I do to correct it before running the engine?

Rawknees is the only guy I ever known to be sticking straight out like that. That thing will poke your eye out. And clearly unprotected. Be careful, he's real dangerous when he gets excited like that.

That's not a factory adjustment (there is none), it is a bolt plugging the boost vacuum port
|
That is a homemade boost controller. Normally that port is vented to atmosphere (allows the diaphragm to move under air pressure supplied to the side of the bell). Originally there was a metal tube screwed down there that went up through the engine tin and into the engine bay (to keep water from getting in there). One simple thing you can do is put a hose barb fitting in place of that nut/bolt combination and then run a hose up and into the engine compartment.
By the way, someone made that modification in order to run higher than stock boost - not a good idea if nothing was done to monitor and adjust fueling (onboard AFR gauge and adjustable WUR). |

Extremely dangerous place to ask for advice.
The answer is seldom what you expected with this group. Sent from my iPhone while Driving |
Haha I don’t mind the funny replies.
Thanks for the helpful info Rawknees...I’ll replace the bolt with a barb as you suggested. The wastegate internals won’t be affected by converting back, correct? |

The purpose of that bolt is to limit the amount of movement from the diaphragm, and thus the spring and valve, buy blocking, or lessening, the flow of air out of the "bell" (the topside of the diaphragm) - a crude boost controller/increaser. Quote:

That will up the spring pressure to increase boost. It will add more preload on the spring. But it still needs to be vented or it can be erratic. I drilled a hole through the bolt. Did this for years
