Oil drain with chainbox opening
So the tech article says to drain but it’s not required. I just put 14 quarts of pretty pricey oil in this car about 500 miles ago. I’m replacing the tensioners and don’t want to drain. Opinions? How much mess will his be? I’ll have to check the valves too but think maybe I can from the top sode.

Worst case scenario, would be to just drain the crank case, only about 2-1/2 quarts there max.

Thanks. New question...would a tensioner that was suspect be weak or have some obvious problem on inspection? Last week I had a sound from the chainbox one night and then next morning the sound was gone. I suspected the tensioner was warning me but last night as I opened the box and put a screwdriver on it it was pretty tight. Anyone ever change a bad tensioner? Opinions?

Yes, have changed bad tensioners. Don't forget a new o-ring for the tensioners.
Do yourself a favor and drain the crankcase.

So should a suspect tensioner be obviously bad?

jack up the rear of the car. Easier to work on and oil will go to the other end of the engine....no need to drain oil.
Not sure about tensioner noise. If its bad and present more then not then change it. Otherwise leave it alone. In my opinion. Chris |
