P/C upgrade on 3.0** 3.2 short stroke or 3.0 Euro

Going to rebuild my "Top End" on my stock 1983 175hp 3.0 motor.

Plan:
1. 3.2 Mahle PS98-014 10.2:1 (Short Stroke)
2. 40mm PMO carbs
3. 964 Cams
4. Stock heads
5. SSI Headers

I was locked and loaded to do this when my mechanic threw out the option of going with 3.0 Euro Pistons & Cylinders in lieu of the 3.2 Short Stoke listed above (Euro set is approx. $1,000 less.)

From what I'm gathering the difference between the 3.2 short stroke & Euro 3.0 is the torque is much better with the 3.2 setup. I'm running pump gas and staying with single ignition. Euro has a little lower compression(9.8) than the 3.2(10.2)but with Carbs I've also learned that I should be good as the carbs will have a tendency to run a little richer and minimize / prevent running lean on the higher compression. Is this correct? Am I missing anything?

Question is do I go with the
1. 3.2 Short Stroke P/C
or
2. 3.0 Euro P/C

Thanks for any input.

40 mm carbs are on the smaller side for 3.2 but used
Another thought, just doing the top end all new will stress the bottom old bearings.
Just doing the valve job many times maximizes the compression.
I don’t even like reringing on an old bottom end.
If you don’t open the bottom end you still don't know what you own

I am at the exact same place as you are EXCEPT when trying to install my 964 cam I learned the PO built this engine with a 2.7S cam. 964 doesn't fit because they are 49mm.
I have SSI's and the Mahle Euro 9.8 pistons already. I am thinking about putting PMO 46's on it and keeping the 2.7 and 3.0's.
To be honest - the Euro 3.0 9.8CR with the 2.7S cam with CIS and SSI's was really fun. And I don't know why it worked or if it caused my ring issues.

Interesting. Just got off the phone with EBS out of Nevada, they actually cleared up that the 964 cams doesn't have enough clearance to be used with the Euro P/C. So looks like going with 3.2 SS option. Thanks

Wow, that's really interesting.
Sooo...
If used they will put small smiley faces from valves on my piston faces?
Ask me how I know

Sorry about that. I'm not expert and a novice at best. Call up the guys at EBS and they can help you out. I believe they can get you a custom set of pistons to give you enough clearance or get you the right cam.

If you get custom pistons, go for the 3.2 and a mod-s cams to compliment the 40mm carbs.

Wish I had done the 3.2 SS
