Interesting new development by J&E

As the topic implies, J&E has come out with an in-house developed skirt coating. According to the text, it eliminates piston slap, which has been a common complaint of forged 2618 alloy pistons.

Unfortunately, also according to the text, it is not, or not YET, available for Porsche applications. An interesting development nontheless.

JE's Patented Perfect Skirt Coating Is A Breakthrough In Piston Technology

You could get your pistons coated with a very similar coating by someone like Swain Tech.

I doubt that is the case. Its a patented process/materials, meaning it is different from previoussly existing processes/materials. Explained somewhat here from the articles text:

Unlike the processes used to apply other piston coatings, Perfect Skirt is not sprayed on the piston. “It’s an advanced screen-printing processes that provides thickness ac curacies to within several microns,” says DiBlasi. The application process starts with a thorough cleaning of the piston, then a fluorescence inspection is made to ensure a pristine surface. The piston is then mounted on proprietary mechanized equipment located in a climate-controlled room within the JE manufacturing facility. After the coating material is applied to the skirt, the piston moves through two thermal treatments—the second of which is a bonding and curing operation.

(Left) a piston with Perfect Skirt needs only .0005-.0025in of clearance depending on application. (Right) A piston without Perfect Skirt can need .003-.005in of clearance, making it noisy on startup and more prone to wear. The thickness of the Perfect Skirt coating takes up the slack in the bore, and because Perfect Skirt is compressible, it is unaffected by the piston's thermal expansion.
One of the more interesting footnotes to the overall manufacturing process using Perfect Skirt coating is that the actual diameter of the bare piston is not adjusted to accommodate the coating. In other words, the engine builder need not concern with calculating a new running clearance that takes into account the self-fitting dynamics of the Perfect Skirt coating.

It's called Abradable coating material its is good that they have started using it.

It is cool that it’s compressable. I assume the current coatings ore not but tbh I don’t know if they are or not.

Is there a comparable abradable coating similar to JE’s?

I plan to get a set of custom CP pistons in the near future and would like to apply something like this product to the piston skirts. I see some offering abradable coatings like line2line but don’t know which company might be best for our application.

I had a set of JEs fitted in July last year, they appear to have something similar applied. Certainly I cannot hear any piston slap from cold.

My powder coater applies something to the inside of super chargers. Wonder if that would work on piston skirts?

IHI used abradable coatings on turbos back in the early 2000s. I bet this is thinner and more durable.

US Chrome has been offering this abradable coating for a while now too
